About kidOYO (link)

Kids Learning Code (link) is a process and methodology where kids learn how to write computer programs using approaches of increasing complexity starting with the basics. Kids can engage this process as young as 3 in our experience, and will advance at their own pace and self-interest.

Minecraft (link) is a 3D modelling environment and sandbox construction game. It is useful as an educational tool in many ways, instigating creativity that outputs via 3D printers, electronic prototpe devices constructed by students, learning advanced programming languages like Lua, Java or Python, not to mention the social skills it can enable when used effectively. We use an EDU-mod of Minecraft specifically in our programs.

This kidOYO monthly program develops programming and physical computing "maker" skills in kids, and is an attempt to join the interests of kids in the 7 -...?(hmm...well...?) age range... with a highly valuable educational path. It is an opportunity for students to engage in a discovery based experience that will cover a number of interactive technology experiences aimed at the creative sandbox that is Minecraft... including:

Basic game programmingartistic story telling and musical parodyengineering and science challengesinvention kits and electronic prototype testingweb literacy and publishing knowledge, and personal access to professional toy and game developers who bring a real-world context to student learning.

Ever hear of anything like it? Neither have we.. but we are excited about what it will be!

Our first student participant is 8 years old and is interested in running his own server, playing Minecraft Flans and Buildcraft, and several other creative pursuits. Our second participant is 9 years old and is already running his own server with too many interests to list. If you know of any similar kids... and we know you do... this is going to be a very unique learning event for you to consider attending.

Each monthly ticket purchase includes two weekend days from 10am - 4pm. Club members may come for the full 6 hours or for their desired time. Sorry, but we can not accomodate partial month payment options or "make up" classes.

February meeting dates are listed below:

February 8th & 16th

We love the "Maker Movement"; as professional makers of manufactured goods for the past 10+ years we know how valuable the opportunity to acquire engineering skills can be. As educational toy and technology developers, we appreciate the real-world education of making finished outcomes possible, of iterating our own efforts and "failing forward" in productive ways to give tangible value to others. As entrepreneurs exploring material science to create unique products and packaging, or designers working with subtractive injection molding and additive 3D printed prototyping processes, or programmers working with advanced tools of data science to enable new insights and services... there has never been a more exciting time to become a maker!

kidOYO is about making that opportunity available to kids, our young makers. We are parents, we know the importance of putting these skills in the hands of kids, and we know schools are not getting that job done early enough or with enough real world context. If you want these skills to be available to kids, you have to put them in the room with the freedom to engage productively. Acceptance and success is found in the approach.
kidOYO is making a "Maker Education" available on Long Island. We are offering an opportunity to parents to allow their kids to participate alongside our own. We are aggressively bringing new tools and resources into these programs each month, and presenting learning opportunities in a student-led format. We do not supply answers, we provoke inquiry. We do not teach to facts, we investigate possibilities and make outcomes happen. We encourage confidence in young people engaging the engineering design process by providing a freedom to "Fail Forward" without fear. We utilize the scientific method for practical purposes and challenge kids to think in ways they are often not accustomed to.
kidOYO is the opposite of traditional school; and we believe that is the greatest opportunity in the world of education today. We are working with professional teachers to integrate our methods with the Common Core and new Science Standards in hopes that new educational options will emerge for classrooms all over this country.
If you would like your child to learn about computer programming, electronic prototyping, circuits and micro-controllers, 3D printing and CAD design, Minecraft Mod-making, collaboration and installation, robotics, rocketry, and more... get involved while the opportunity exists.
Space is limited.
We are focusing on kids aged 9-13 (inquire for more info).
As the originators and leaders of the Coder Dojo movement on Long Island, as well as maker camps, MinecraftEDU programs and unique startup entrepreneurial learning opportunities, kidOYO allows young people to explore a wide spectrum of interests... the rest is up to you.

Please contact us if you have any questions. Differentiated instruction from multiple instructors will allow students to move at their own pace and skill level.  If you are not sure if your child is ready for this type of learning opportunity, please contact us to set up a phone assessment.
