Kids Learning Code (link) is a process and methodology where kids learn how to write computer programs using approaches of increasing complexity starting with the basics. Kids can engage this process as young as 3 in our experience, and will advance at their own pace and self-interest.
Minecraft (link) is a 3D modelling environment and sandbox construction game. It is useful as an educational tool in many ways, instigating creativity that outputs via 3D printers, electronic prototpe devices constructed by students, learning advanced programming languages like Lua, Java or Python, not to mention the social skills it can enable when used effectively. We use an EDU-mod of Minecraft specifically in our programs.
This kidOYO Summer Camp develops programming and physical computing "maker" skills in kids, and is an attempt to join the interests of kids in the 7 -...?(hmm...well...?) age range... with a highly valuable educational path. It is an opportunity for students to engage in a discovery based experience that will cover a number of interactive technology experiences aimed at the creative sandbox that is Minecraft... including:
Basic game programming, artistic story telling and musical parody, engineering and science challenges, invention kits and electronic prototype testing, web literacy and publishing knowledge, and personal access to professional toy and game developers who bring a real-world context to student learning.
Each ticket purchase includes five days of summer camp tuition with events running from 9am - 4pm.
Students will pack their own lunch, and Friday will include a Pizza Party!
Each student will receive a tshirt, usb drive, and a personal arduino leonardo "Invention Kit" called MaKey MaKey. ($50 value)
We love the "Maker Movement"; as professional makers of manufactured goods for the past 10+ years we know how valuable the opportunity to acquire engineering skills can be. As educational toy and technology developers, we appreciate the real-world education of making finished outcomes possible, of iterating our own efforts and "failing forward" in productive ways to give tangible value to others. As entrepreneurs exploring material science to create unique products and packaging, or designers working with subtractive injection molding and additive 3D printed prototyping processes, or programmers working with advanced tools of data science to enable new insights and services... there has never been a more exciting time to become a maker!

This camp will take place in the Computer Science Building located on the beautiful Stony Brook University Campus [Room 2311]. During breaks from learning, students will spend time exploring campus, playing outside and touring selected buildings.

Cancellation Policy: kidOYO understands that from time to time plans do not go as we expected. For that reason we offer the following terms for cancellations. There is a $200 guaranteed placement fee that will not be refunded should you need to cancel for any reason leading up to your camp, until May 31st, 2014. From June 1st, 2014 until 2 weeks prior to your event the guaranteed placement fee increases to $250. If you should find the need to cancel in the last 2 weeks leading up to your camp you will receive a 50% refund of your tuition.
