Talks & DIRECT Video Feed: "The Mars Curiosity Lander"

Sunday, August 5th. Food & Drink Specials 7pm-8pm | Talks 8pm-9:45pm | Mars Lander Video Feed ~10:15pm

Downtown Independent Theater, 251 S Main St, Los Angeles, CA 90012 - ALL AGES WELCOME!

If you don't already know about The Mars Lander "Curiosity" - you soon will. Curiosity is currently hurtling through space towards Mars and will be bursting through the Martian atmosphere at around 10pm this Sunday. It's the most complex autonomous landing procedure ever devised by man, culminating in the use of something called the "Sky Crane". NASA is providing a DIRECT video feed PLUS a couple of presenters and other video content that we'll be showing on Sunday evening. Come hungry - we will be serving up space tacos from The Taco Project!

"NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission is the most ambitious, complex mission in the history of robotic space exploration. On 5th August 2012, the mission will set down a large, mobile laboratory - the dune buggy-sized Curiosity rover - using a new form of precision landing technology that makes many of Mars' most intriguing regions viable destinations for the first time." ""Exploration is in our nature. We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars."

― Carl Sagan, Cosmos

Event MC: "Curiosity, The Mars Lander"
Douglas Campbell / Co-Founder & Curator, Mindshare LA

This special Mindshare event will take people into the far reaches of our solar system as the Mars lander approaches the Red Planet! Besides a panel from great minds at JPL, we're also lucky to be able to view the direct feed from JPL on a giant screen as the lander negotiates it's biggest challenge yet: its automated entry, descent and landing phase!

Douglas is a community constructor, experience engineer and tuxedo traveler. He co-founded Mindshare LA in 2006 as well as the interactive collective Syyn Labs in 2009. He likes volunteering at an organic farm and wearing tuxedos for charitable escapades.

To Mars on a Collision Course (Mindshare 50 VIDEO)
Adam Steltzner Ph.D. / Entry, Descent and Landing Lead, Mars Science Laboratory Mission, Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Adam leads a team that has developed the novel entry, descent and landing system for the rover Curiosity, the largest rover ever sent to another planet. His team, spread across the country, has developed with heats shields, parachutes, rockets engines and a radar all to gently place this mega rover, wheels down, safely on the surface of Mars.

He gave an amazing talk at Mindshare 50, which we'll be sharing with attendees of this special event!

The Why - and How - of JPL's Most Advanced Lander Yet
Matt Clausen / Art Director, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Matt thrives in the creative space between disciplinary and planetary spheres. As the Art Director for Team Conductor, in the Human Interfaces group at the NASA Jet propulsion Laboratory, Matt collaborates with Scientists, Programmers and engineers to design interfaces that control robots and spacecraft. He also creates video games, interactive web experiences and 3D animations in an effort to engage the public in NASA's pursuit of exploration and discovery. Needless to say, he loves his job.

In anticipation of the Mars Science Laboratory, or Curiosity Rover landing ( on August 5th), Matt and the rest of Team Conductor at JPL, recently released the "NASA Mars Landing" game for Xbox Kinect. It was produced in collaboration between NASA, Microsoft and Smoking Gun Studios. Matt has a Master's degree in Film and Animation from the University of Southern California, School of Cinematic Arts. When he's not ideating with NASA he is with his Fiancée Mary and their two cats Pickle and Mars.

Making Data Beautiful, Comprehendible... and Useful!
Alexander Smith / Web Developer II, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Alex received a Masters degree in Library and Information Science from Kent State University near Cleveland, Ohio. After a few years of university faculty positions spread across the US, he soon found himself relocating to Los Angeles downtown arts district after he got a foot in the door at JPL as a systems librarian.

Shortly after starting, other JPL departments soon discovered Alex's hobby of doing unthinkable projects with JavaScript and data visualization would prove valuable in other areas around lab. Currently, Alex works with various communities of scientists, artists, and programmers by prototyping 2d and 3d data visualization tools for both web and mobile web. Alex thoroughly enjoys helping scientists and end-users to view meaningful data in an elegant manner from the mountains of 0's and 1's and 0.00001's.

10pm / JPL Direct Video Feed

We'll be viewing the direct feed from JPL on a giant screen as the lander negotiates it's biggest challenge yet: its automated entry, descent and landing phase! Read more at NASA's website...

INSTALLATIONS

NASA revealed a new video game recently, one that celebrates the Aug. 5 landing of its huge Curiosity rover on the surface of Mars. The game, called "Mars Rover Landing," is produced in collaboration with Microsoft and plays on the Xbox 360 system using the Kinect motion sensor. It's available free of charge in the Xbox Live Marketplace and Kinect Central, officials said.

"Mars Rover Landing" allows players to take control of Curiosity's spacecraft as it streaks through the Red Planet's atmosphere on a harrowing journey that mission engineers have dubbed "seven minutes of terror."

There will be a large screen interactive setup at the event!
