SMART - Where Science Meets Art

Tuesday, June 26th

Salvage Bar717 West 7th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017

Constructed of reclaimed materials from the Roosevelt Residences (what charm!), Salvage is the recently opened Downtown haunt with Carrara marble slabs and windows from the 20s. MC, SMART - Where Science Meets Art
Douglas Campbell / Co-Founder & Curator, Mindshare LA

Science (and hence technology) has always had a romance with Art. Since well before  Leonardo da Vinci, the dynamic relationship has inspired and enabled creative minds. How do new tools create new opportunities for expression? After last month's successful launch of The SMART Gallery at LIB - Mindshare LA continues to explore the past, present and future of SMARTism.

Douglas is a community constructor, experience engineer and tuxedo traveler. He co-founded Mindshare LA in 2006 as well as the interactive collective Syyn Labs in 2009. He likes volunteering at an organic farm and wearing tuxedos for charitable escapades.

Art at the Nanoscale
David Brown / Ph.D.c, Applied Physics, CalTech

Using the same state of the art tools that Intel uses to create microprocessors, researches at the Caltech Kavli Nanoscience Institute can create works of art so small that is not perceptible to the human eye. This artwork, which can only been seen with the help of microscopes, reveals the structure and beauty of the natural world.

David is a Ph.D. candidate in Applied Physics. He received his B.S. in Physics from MIT. Before coming to Caltech, David worked at OSRAM Opto-Semiconductors developing ridge waveguide lasers. As a member of the Caltech Thermoelectrics group, David focuses on characterization of high temperature material transport properties.

A Portrait of the Scientist as a Young Artist
Dennis Callahan / Ph.D.c, Materials Science, CalTech

Science and mathematics have the unique opportunity to create novel works of art that no one else can, from whole a system of generative art that grows itself, down to micrography that captures images of the tiniest things on Earth. The emergence and rapid development of technology that is allowing whole new art mediums to pop up as quickly as we can blog about them. But scientists are of the privledged few who can make use of these devices, in labs and universities, that create beautiful works that are left under microscopes, and hence underrappreciated by most. Callahan asks us to consider the beauty of science as an artform all its own.

Dennis is a fourth year graduate student in Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology, where he studies the microstructure of solar cells.  He has achieved local and national recognition for his many types of stunning scientific art. In his spare time Dennis is an amateur photographer and singer-songwriter. He also experiments with generative art, which is an art form at the intersection of abstract drawing and computer programming in which artistic works are created with a computer through the use of human designed algorithms.

Mindshare LA holds monthly workshops, salons and movie screenings that gather ~1000 Angelenos for evenings of inspiration and interaction. Our main event held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month includes live music, games, art and a curated program of short, eclectic presentations. Over the years Mindshare has become a mecca for intellectuals, artists, scientists and other progressive characters to meet, broaden their perspective and expand their networks.

Mindshare's ballooning popularity is emblematic of generation steeped in chaos and an unabashed need for personal fulfillment. If you ever come to LA, come to Mindshare.

If you haven't been to a Mindshare LA event, you haven't seen Angelenos at their eclectic best.

A forward-thinking cultural salon. New ideas flow as liberally as the alcohol.

--Brand X

This is what it would be like if the internet jumped out of the box and grabbed your arm for a trip into Alice's Wonderland of ideas and madmen.

--KCET Online (LA PBS affiliate)

A forum for human technology in its most literal form - shared knowledge. Fueled by fancy pastries, an exceptionally well-stocked open bar and a room abuzz with stylish people.
