Secrets and Lies

"The secret of life is to appreciate the pleasure of being terribly deceived"

- Oscar Wilde

Douglas Campbell

MC, "Secrets & Lies"
Douglas Campbell / Co-Founder & Curator, Mindshare LA

Secrecy, deception & trickery, we humans are a devious bunch. From playful myths as children to dark schemes as adults, we constantly mask the truth. We must question everything on our quest to find it.

Doug is a community constructor, experience engineer and tuxedo traveler. He co-founded Mindshare LA in 2006 as well as the interactive collective Syyn Labs in 2009. He likes wearing tuxedos for charitable escapades.

Tristan Ursell

The Largest Scientific Instrument Ever Built
Dr. Tristan Ursell / Biophysicist, Stanford University

What is the biggest scientific device ever built?  What was it for?  Did it prevent the end of the world?  How did it spur one of the greatest conspiracy theories of all time?  The answers are revealed during this interwoven, true tale of rocks, gigawatts, water, waves, salt and steel.

Tristan is a passionate teacher and communicator of science, exploring the interface of science, policy and daily life.  He works as a biophysicist at Stanford University, as Managing Editor of the Stanford Journal of Law, Science and Policy, and is a resident of the infamous Langton Labs intentional community in San Francisco.

Vanessa van Petten

How to Become a Human Lie Detector
Vanessa van Petten / Curator and Speaker,

We are told hundreds of lies each and every day--from advertisements, our colleagues and, of course, from our friends and family. Is there a way to know when people are lying to you? Can you become a human lie detector? New research shows that yes, we can detect lies from facial expressions, body language and voice tone. In this presentation Vanessa Van Petten will share the latest research and tips on lie detection.

Vanessa Van Petten is an author and expert on human relationships. She runs, a website where readers can find the most interesting research on human behavior in easy to understand and sometimes humorous terms. She has been featured on CNN, in the Wall Street Journal and on the Real Housewives of Orange County for her work with parent and teen relationships.

College of Lockpicking: Pick it like it's 1899
Jamie Schwettmann & Eric Michaud / Founders, College of Lockpicking

You can pick your friends. You can pick your beer. But can you pick... a lock? Discover the inner workings of locks from the 20th century BC and which ideas from the original designs are still found in locks today. Learn the parts of a modern pin-tumbler lock, and what makes picking them possible. Then join us at the College of Lockpicking table to try your hand at this mysterious art!

College of Lockpicking holds the philosophy that removing the veil of secrecy from the traditionally-guilded study of locks fundamentally alters the way we approach security, technology, personal property, and our communities, thereby enabling a more holistic consciousness of the interplay between our delicate social contracts and the illusion of security.
