Mindshare LA Salon: "The Vast Blue"

Thursday, March 22nd

The Mezz Bar, Alexandria Hotel - 2nd Floor, 501 S. Spring St., Los Angeles, CA 90013

Built in 1906, The Alexandria was one of the premiere hotels in the country and catered to guests such as Charlie Chaplain, Winston Churchill & Theodore Roosevelt, to name a few. The Mezz Bar's ceiling was originaly the ceiling of the lobby below, which contained 'The Million Dollar Carpet', named for the amount of movie deals that were said to be cut on it every day...

"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came."

- John F. Kennedy

No water, no life. No blue, no green.

- Sylvia Earle

OCEAN-THEMED COSTUMES? Why not?! Feel free to come as anything related to the sea! Want to showcase your inner mermaid? Or perhaps your inner star-fish? Or maybe cause some trouble as the burly fisherman? Even if you don't come as anything we'll have a jelly-fish hat making station so you'll fit in nicely.

8:30pm / Presentations Include

MC, "The Vast Blue"
Douglas Campbell / Co-Founder & Curator, Mindshare LA

The oceans represent a gigantic and crucial system of our biosphere. Without the bounty of it's depths, the physical effects of it's motion and the massive chemical exchange throughout its body, the human species, as well as most life on earth, would quickly perish. If we don't learn how to care for it more responsibly this reality will become frighteningly apparent.

Doug is a community constructor, experience engineer and tuxedo traveler. He co-founded Mindshare LA in 2006 as well as the interactive collective Syyn Labs in 2009. He likes wearing tuxedos for charitable escapades.

Diving to the Bottom of the Ocean (and Getting Back Again)
Loretta Hidalgo Whitesides / Science & Project Coordinator, Virgin Oceanic

Loretta has performed some of the deepest ocean dives in the world, including the Mir dives (deepest dive was 3,519 m) and Deep Rover dives she did as part of the filming of Director James Camperon's 3D IMAX movie “Aliens of the Deep.” Learn about the latest developments in Virgin Oceanic's effort to send someone down three times deeper-- the bottom of the Mariana Trench-- the very deepest point in the ocean where new life forms and oceanic resources are currently being discovered. Loretta will explain the importance of exploring these far reaches of our planet.

Loretta has degrees in biology from Stanford and Caltech, floats weightless as crew for Zero-G’s 727 aircraft and has worked in the Arctic with NASA doing research on plants living in extreme environments. She is the co-creator of Yuri's Night, a worldwide event that commemorates April 12, 1961, the day of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s first manned spaceflight, and April 12, 1981, the inaugural launch of NASA’s Space Shuttle. Loretta is passionate about using science and exploration to make a difference for the planet.

So Long And Thanks for All the Fish
Casson Trenor / Senior Markets Campaigner with Greenpeace USA

The oceans are in serious peril. Overfishing, pollution, and wanton mismanagement threaten to alter the very nature of our marine ecosystems and eliminate many of the essential services that the oceans provide for human life. The state of affairs can be daunting to the point of paralyzing us with dejection -- what can we do in the face of such a threat? How can we, simply by being who we are and embodying that which we believe, arrest the damage being wrought upon our oceans, and build a better world for all of us?

Trenor holds the position of Senior Markets Campaigner with Greenpeace USA, where he spearheads the organization’s efforts to hold restaurants and supermarkets accountable for their seafood sustainability practices and to help educate the public about the global fisheries crisis. He is the author of Sustainable Sushi: A Guide to Saving the Oceans One Bite at a Time, a pocket guide that enables consumers to dine with confidence at the sushi bar. Trenor also founded the world’s first sustainable sushi restaurant, San Francisco’s Tataki Sushi and Sake Bar.

The Pursuit of Wave Energy
Brian Moffat / CEO, Spindrift Energy

Prior attempts to extract clean and renewable power from the sea have met with setbacks and disappointments. Many of these setbacks have been the result of ocean energy devices breaking, or being lost, in rough seas. And, newer devices which may be able to survive at sea are complicated and expensive. The key to obtaining low-cost power from the sea is simplicity, survivability, and low-maintenance. Spindrift Energy has developed a very simple, and low-cost, wave energy device that promises to deliver low-cost power at a global scale.

Brian has degrees in Computer Science, Biology and Chemistry from UC Irvine. He enjoys solving difficult problems, and has created innovations on behalf of: Google, Disney Imagineering R&D, and many smaller companies. Brian founded "Spindrift Energy" in order to provide a practical and renewable replacement for much of the electrical power currently generated through the burning of fossil fuels, and, hopefully, to reduce the rate at which the Earth’s oceans are acidified by the by-products of fossil-fuel combustion.

Hugs and Drugs from Sea Slugs
Patrick J. Krug / Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences
California State University, Los Angeles

Enjoy colorful images of sea slugs, the ocean's most vivacious creatures both in appearance and in their innovative sex lives. We will discuss how their beauty may lead to potential cancer treatments, and whether it's better to act like a boy or a girl (or both) during group sex on the sea floor.

Patrick J. Krug got his Ph.D. in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and has been a professor at Cal State L.A. for 10 years. He is a frequent contributor to the Madeleine Brand radio show on KPCC, and studies sea slugs to better understand how new species form and adapt in the ocean.
