Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality
Dr. Christopher Ryan / Author of the acclaimed book, "Sex at Dawn"

What were our ancestors' sex lives like? How we can possibly know such a thing? And why this knowledge is of crucial importance today, especially in regards to monogamy, sexual orientation, and family dynamics?

Christopher received a BA in Literature in 1984 and an MA and Ph.D. in psychology twenty years later. He spent the intervening decades traveling around the world, working at very odd jobs (e.g., gutting salmon in Alaska, teaching English to prostitutes in Bangkok and self-defense to land-reform activists in Mexico, managing commercial real-estate in New York’s Diamond District, helping Spanish physicians publish their research, Ebonics to English translation for a Spanish film festival...). Along the way, he decided to pursue doctoral studies in psychology, where his research focused on trying to distinguish the human from the cultural. His doctoral dissertation analyzes the prehistoric roots of human sexuality.

Neuroscience of Love
Sharon Brock / Science Journalist

Love is elusive and difficult to define. We look to our parents, books or even swamis for clarity about what love is. In this talk, we turn to neuroscience for answers and explore the key brain chemicals that go haywire when you meet that special someone and how these chemicals change over time as you go through different stages in your relationship. With this greater understanding of the evolutionary forces behind your elated insanity, you will be able to make more informed decisions about your romantic relationships, and, ultimately, define what love really means to you.

Native Angelino, Sharon Brock, is a writer, yoga instructor and science geek. She loves to travel and during her summer breaks as a high school biology and neuroscience teacher, she had the opportunity to travel to 35 countries. Sharon was pre-med at UCSB, where she also earned a master’s degree in education. Sharon has a second master’s degree from Columbia University in journalism. She currently lives in Venice and enjoys exploring the nooks and crannies of our creative and vibrant city.

Shouting for Sex: What Can We Learn About Mating From Other Animals?
Jason G. Goldman / Doctoral student in Developmental Psychology, USC

Animals have adopted all sorts of special skills to survive but some of the most interesting behaviors surround their mating strategies. Ostentatious plumage, fancy footsteps and even arguably artists skills are found in nature. This talk will explore how animals attract mates using their calls... and what it might teach us about our own mating strategies.

Jason G. Goldman is a scientist, writer, and photographer. He is a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern California where he conducts research on the evolution and architecture of the mind. He's a blogger for Scientific American and a columnist with BBC Future, and always has a thousand ideas for convincing people that science is both fun and important. He once stood on a street in Brentwood with a pair of binoculars duct-taped to a tripod to show passers-by the transit of Venus...and it worked.
