Michael Danforth Community Service Award Luncheon
Friday, July 19, 2013 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM (EDT)
WNC Health Advocates honors Laurey Masterton with its Second Annual Michael T. Danforth Community Service Award.
Laurey is a three-time cancer survivor with a fierce spirit. She is a living-wage-certified employer and her company serves healthy, nutritious and delicious food. She has given selflessly to her community and works to educate the public about healthy food and about cancer.
When she was 55, her "magic age," as she called it, Laurey bicycled cross-country to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. Most recently, she organized the first JOY Ride to benefit Livestrong at the YMCA.
Laurey's motto is "Don't postpone joy," and she lives it every day.
When & Where
WNC Health Advocates
Our Mission: WNC Health Advocates exists to offer comfort and support to people with illness and disability to new mothers and to families, and to advocate for access to quality health care for all.
We serve Western North Carolina through three programs:
Patient Pals & Family Friends – a peer support program that pairs trained volunteers with people who have illness or injury and are isolated. Our volunteers offer companionship and encouragement and help people learn how to become better self-advocates.
Start From Seed – A volunteer doula program serving low-income, first-time mothers who otherwise would not have this valuable help through childbirth and the postnatal period. Women who have doulas have a lower rate of complications and tend to bond better with their babies.
True Stories – Our educational program offers information on our health care system and on the new Affordable Care Act by telling the stories of people in the system. We have a one-hour PowerPoint presentation. We also are happy to answer questions for anyone who calls.
All of our services are free. To learn more, visit www.wnchealthadvocates.org
