Miami Children’s Initiative Opens Its First Community Space

The Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI), in partnership Miami Dade County Public Housing and Community Development, BB&T, TSAO DesignGroup, and Himan Brown Charitable Trust, is proud to announce the opening of our first community space within the Annie Coleman Complex Apartments.

A children’s play/learning room that will boast a full library, a plush, colorful rug to read or play on, small sofas and chairs, games and art supplies. A teen room with free internet and laptops for youth to learn, complete homework assignments and gather. The two additional rooms will be used to conduct one-on-one counseling, group workshops, trainings, classes (financial, health and wellness, parenting, etc.) and more. The ultimate goal is a community space that is welcoming, accessible, and child-friendly.

On May 28th and 29th, join MCI and BB&T to transform a four-bedroom apartment unit into a warm, inviting and beautiful Community Space.  Our grand opening will take place on May 30th at 11:00 a.m.

Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

You are also invited to join us on Thursday, May 30th at 11:00 a.m. for the Grand Opening located at 1907 NW 60th Street, Miami, FL 33142.

A broad range of services, opportunities, and activities will be provided to children and families in the surrounding area all focused on creating a cradle to career pipeline.  The office will be open seven days a week beginning on May 30th and sits in the heart of the three-blocks in which MCI has begun its block-by-block strategy. Using the Harlem Children’s Zone as a framework, MCI’s Impact Zone goes from NW 15th to NW 22nd Avenues and NW 59th and 63rd Streets. Within the Impact Zone, MCI has started working directly with 40 families and 104 children and youth residing on NW 60th Street between 17th and 19th Avenues and 19th Avenue between 59th Street and 60th Street.

With funding support from BB&T and an interior design team from TSAO DesignGroup, MCI will transform the apartment into a beautiful space that makes you want to stop and enter.

We will need lots of dedicated volunteers to help us make this transformation happen. Volunteers will help us paint walls, plant flowers outside, put together furniture, play with children at the MCI KaBOOM! playground and much more.

Miami Children's Initiative

The Miami Children’s Initiative’s (MCI) mission is focused on improving the lives of the children and families residing in Liberty City. We are deploying an approach similar to the Harlem Children’s Zone because of its tremendous success in the transformation of Harlem. And more significantly in the academic performance of children and youth served. MCI is a comprehensive “Cradle to Career” neighborhood focused initiative with the goal of breaking the cycle of poverty. Over the next decade, MCI’s primary focus is on children ages 0-18 living in Liberty City, bounded to the north and south 79 Street and 41st Street and to the east and west by 7th Avenue and 27th Avenue.
