This MLK weekend, MHacks III is going to redefine what a hackathon can be.
MHacks isn't just for hardcore programmers. It's not just about competing. It isn't about energy-drink-enabled sleep deprivation. It isn't about starting a viable business.
MHacks is for creators. It's for those of you who see problems and want to tackle them, innovating using existing skills, and augmenting them with the skills of those around you. MHacks III will be the best place to do that, and we can't wait to see what you make of it.
When is MHacks, and how long does it last?
MHacks is taking place January 17-19, starting at approximately 5pm on Friday, and ending at around 4pm on Sunday. The actual hacking period is ~36 hours, from Friday evening to Sunday morning.
Why should I come?
No other event offers the opportunity to meet so many awesome students from such a variety of schools and talk to them, learn from them, and hack with them. Additionally, you'll get a chance to learn how to do some really powerful things (through workshops, tech talks, and API demos) no matter your experience level. You'll also have a chance to interact with and impress some of the best companies in the tech industry, while also being in the running for some amazing prizes.
Last, MHacks is almost certainly the most fun thing you can be doing that weekend. If you disagree, allow us to convince you.
Does it cost anything to come?
Attendance to MHacks is completely free. However, transportation costs will vary. If you are taking a bus heading for MHacks, it shouldn't cost you anything. If you are flying or driving, you may get reimbursed (up to $200) on a first-come, first-served basis. If we can guarantee you a reimbursement, you will be contacted by email by January 1. If you require a reimbursement, save any records of your expenses, even if you do not get an email guaranteeing your reimbursement--additional funds may become available.
How do I know if I can take a bus?
Schools that have a significant number of registrants will most likely get a bus. Bus information (pick-up times, locations) will be made available as soon as it is set, and if you have registered for MHacks, you will be able to sign up for a seat on a bus, even if you don't go to the school for which the bus is primarily intended.
Who can participate?
College and high-school students from anywhere are welcome at MHacks III. If you don't belong to either category and want to come, contact us at email@example.com.
How large can teams be?
Teams can be anywhere from one to four people. If you don't yet have a team and want to be part of one, use the Facebook event page for MHacks III to find those who need your skills (or have the skills you want).
What should I bring with me?
Enthusiasm. And a laptop, your phone, chargers for both, a blanket (or sleeping bag), and whatever else you need to hack, e.g. a better keyboard, essential hardware, etc. We'll provide food, drinks, sleeping space, and (on a limited basis) showers.
What can I make?
Anything. As long as it doesn't break any laws or our rules.
What are your rules?
Don't start working on your hack before the official start of MHacks. You can talk about it and develop your idea early, but nothing else, please.
What if I don't have an idea? What if I have an idea but don't know where to start?
Use the MHacks III event page on Facebook to your advantage. Don't be afraid to advertise what you can offer to others and what you'd want from them. There is almost always a good fit for you, just make the effort to find it.
Should I worry about my safety? I've heard bad things about Detroit.
MHacks is taking place in the Financial District of Detroit and within an area known as Midtown. Nearly 20,000 students attend nearby Wayne State University, which employs its own police officers that patrol all of Midtown. Five minutes (walking distance) from MHacks is Cobo Arena, home to the North American International Auto Show, which incidentally opens to the public on January 18, and attracts nearly 800,000 visitors every year. Needless to say, MHacks is in a very safe area, but feel free to convince yourself by looking for more info about Midtown Detroit.
I'm flying to MHacks. Will I get a ride from the airport?
If you are flying in to DTW (strongly recommended), we will have shuttles transporting MHacks attendees to The Qube. Try to schedule your flight so that you land after 3pm and before 5pm--any later and you might miss part of the event, though you'll still have a ride from the airport. Email us your contact info and arrival time so we can best coordinate shuttles.
Is it going to be epic?
Do you expect anything less?
That wasn't an answer.
And that wasn't a question.
So we're just having a conversation.
