MFA 2012 Workshop - Light Up Your Gele!
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 11:50 AM (WAT)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
The traditional headwrap has become a modern fashion statement, worn by African woman who wish to pay tribute to their heritage, and non-african woman who wish to adopt an ethno-exotic style. The gele is no exception and many believe that, because of it’s complexity, it is the most dramatic and most beautiful of all headwraps.
In the LIGHT UP YOUR GELE! workshop, we’ll take the modern gele one step further into the future, exploring the integration of e-textiles to make its delicate folds and ties light up, move, and make noise all on its own. Using arduino Lilypads, sensors, conductive materials, solar, and simple snaps and sewing notions, we’ll test how far we can blur the lines between fashion and function. By workshop’s end, participants will have created a fully functional gele to take home.
