StarVista Daybreak Program

Fact: In a County that includes Atherton, Menlo Park, Hillsborough and Woodside, along with companies such as Facebook, Oracle, and Genentech, there are over 500 homeless youth on any given day in San Mateo County.

Fact: Daybreak is the only facility for homeless youth in San Mateo County.

Background: Started in 1990 by Assemblyman Rich Gordon, Carol Gray, and the Junior League of Palo Alto/Mid-Peninsula, Daybreak was created to address a dire need for a transitional living program for homeless youth. Daybreak’s mission is to empower homeless teens to overcome their challenges, build positive relationships with their community, and achieve financial self-sufficiency.

The Need:  Historically, Daybreak has received generous support from foundations and individuals. Despite the support from the private sector, government funds have been the primary and critical source of funds that have enabled Daybreak to fulfill its mission. Recently, we received stunning news that government funding will no longer exist at previous and operationally planned for levels.

Our critically important program is at risk. We are now facing potential significant reduction in staff to combine with reduced hours of accessibility for the homeless youth we serve. In other words, Daybreak would close during the daytime hours, essentially becoming a shelter rather than a home. We need your help.

Why you should help: Daybreak is an environment that offers a welcome semblance of normalcy and stability in young lives impacted by chaos and unpredictability. In addition to providing shelter for our youth, it is our “beyond the bed” services that make Daybreak truly unique. Through the guidance and support our committed team of counselors and volunteers provide over a 12-18 month period, youth begin to trust, and start to live from a place of courage, strength, and belief, in themselves and others. Daybreak youth acquire education, tools, and the confidence needed to strive to break through toward their highest level of self-sufficiency.

While in the program, youth are required to attend school and work. Our trained financial advisors help them create a budget, balance a checkbook , and save 20% of their income. Our residential counselors assist in job searches and finding employment, applying for college, and creating an individualized plan for their future. For some youth, the plan is to go to college, for others, it is to attain a stable job. Beyond the professional guidance, our staff are often the first positive, adult role models for these youth.

Daybreak’s Impact:

  1. 90% of the young people who graduate from Daybreak move on to a positive independent living situation to continue with their work experience and education.
  2. 80% of our homeless, runaway, and foster youth complete high school

How you can make a difference:

A gift to StarVista’s Daybreak program will have a demonstrable impact on a homeless youth’s future. Your support no matter the size, makes a big difference. An an even bigger impact if you share with friends your belief and knowledge of Daybreak’s mission.
