Event Details

If you're worried about the threat to democracy as newspapers wither and the potential for an informed electorate withers with them, please join us for this free and informal San Francisco gathering.

Banyan founder Tom Stites will fill us in about the Project's promising new business model for community-level Web news co-ops, which he shaped as a fellow of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard. The model is designed not only to be self-sustaining in the digital future but also to be replicable from community to community, the way credit unions and food co-ops have spread from coast to coast. The pilot co-op is being organized right now in Massachusetts. Learn more at BanyanProject.com.

Hosts for the event are three Banyan board members who live in the Bay Area: the Web developer Angus Durocher; the journalist and author Dan Gillmor, and the investor and entrepreneur Lauren Walters, joined by other Banyan allies.

Full disclosure: Tom is on a fundraising tour. He's serious when he says you are welcome whether you donate or not, but please do bring your checkbook--we think you'll be moved to help in this important social venture.  Banyan is raising $75,000 to cover the cost of its pilot project, and no donation is too small -- or too large!

Please join us for good conversation and nibbles
in a beautiful space that's an easy walk from the Powell St. BART/Muny station.  If you'll be in SF April 29, please select the number of tickets you need and click the Register button at the top of this page; wherever you live, if you have SF friends who might resonate, please send them the link to this page.
