Back in October, 2010 I was working as a middle school reading teacher in a suburban area. I had a fabulous husband, a good job, a crazy dog, and was living comfortably. I enjoyed online shopping (what woman doesn’t?!) and had recently been overly enjoying shopping the Stella & Dot website. Over the previous six months, I had placed five orders from the website, getting myself some seriously fabulous jewelry. My husband noticed the fifth box arrive on our doorstep and he handed me $200 and said, oh-so kindly, “Why don’t you just shop from yourself?!” I thought he was crazy because I had never, ever, in a million years, EVER thought of myself doing sales of any kind. Home parties? Yuck! But then, I figured if I could have 12 of my friends each do a show one month of the year, I’d have fun and earn some shopping money. Simple, right? Yep- it sure was! At the end of the month, I finally decided to do it. I signed up to be a Stella & Dot stylist, with the intention of having one trunk show a month, enjoying the discount, and have a lot of really cool jewelry to wear and love.
I actually did my first trunk show a month later over the Thanksgiving weekend. I was not only the stylist for the show, but also the hostess, which helped me deal with the nervous feeling. I figured it was just my friends so I’d be fine. I had only a few pieces of jewelry and used my kitchen counter to lay everything using serving platters and vases as displays… and my friends went NUTS over the jewelry. Over $2000 in sales and SIX trunk shows booked later with friends who saw it and loved how easy it was and I was absolutely hooked! I earned my investment back immediately from this show and got over $500 in free jewelry and kept saying how easy the whole experience was. I knew I had to figure out a way to do Stella & Dot trunk shows more often than my original plan; it was so much fun and I loved connecting with amazing women while styling them with cool jewelry over a glass of wine. SO much better than my “day job”!!
Along with my husband and a Stella & Dot mentor, I laid out a simple plan to grow my business. My “why” for doing Stella & Dot had changed from wanting some shopping money to seeing this as a way for me to be able to leave my full time job and stay home when I was finally able to get pregnant. My new plan was easy: book 4-6 trunk shows a month (that’s only 1 a week!) and since I loved the idea of sharing this amazing and stylish business with others, I added sponsoring to my list of goals, too. The best advice I ever got was to “be consistent”, and so even though I’m not top in sales or top in sponsoring, the fact that I am consistent in reaching my goals has made all the difference.
I now have a thriving business with Stella & Dot!! I quit my teaching job and I have a wonderful team of bold, tenacious, stylish business women who have become dear friends and I love mentoring and helping them launch their own business…designed to fit their life!!
