Meet, Mingle and Mentor: Box Women in Tech Social

This is a fantastic opportunity for Bay Area technical women to meet other women in the industry,  network with one another, learn more about Box's Women in Tech group, and look for potential mentors and mentees. The event will include a panel, endless opportunities to make new connections, networking games and some delicious food and drinks. 

Our panel will discuss various kinds of mentorship and what they have learned both as mentors and mentees. We will cover what to look for in a mentor, how to start a mentoring relationship and the benefits of inter-company mentorship. 

The panel features inspirational leaders with varied backgrounds:

Speaker Bios
Karen Catlin, Advocate for Technical Women
Karen Catlin develops powerful women leaders in the tech industry with leadership coaching and advising companies on how to attract and retain female talent. She has an extensive background in Silicon Valley and wants to help the next generation of women have successful careers. Formerly, Karen was a vice president at Adobe Systems. 
Outside of her commercial ventures Karen works with a number of non-profits leveraging her same passion. She’s on the Board of Directors of The CLUB, an incubator of women leaders. Through Brown University Women's Launch Pad, she mentors young women about to start their careers. She’s also on the Advisory Board for MentorNet, an organization that provides mentoring for STEM students.

Yan Qu, VP Data Science, ShareThis
Yan Qu is VP of Data Science and Chief Scientist at ShareThis, where she leads the data science team. She has invented Social Quality Index (SQI) - a unique model of valuing the social activity that occurs around online content. SQI won the Adweek Project Issac Award and has been adopted by major ad agencies for media planning purposes. Previously, she headed the Advanced Research team at AOL's Advertising.com unit, where she pioneered the "lookalike" modeling technique and developed a scalable research prototype that generated double-digit million dollar revenue run rate. She holds 15 patents in the areas of online advertising, predictive modeling, large scale data analytics, social network structures, social quality, and text mining.  Yan holds an M.S. in Computational Linguistics and a PhD in Information and Language Technologies from Carnegie Mellon University, and an M.S. in Linguistics from Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Vasu Jakkal, Sr. Director of Marketing, Brocade
Vasu is the Sr. Director of Integrated Marketing, Strategy, & Operations at Brocade.  Previously Vasu worked at LSI (now Avago) where she served as the Chief of Staff to the CEO. During her time at LSI, Vasu drove several companywide marketing and strategic initiatives for establishing and growing LSI's impact in the Datacenter. Vasu started her career at Intel, where she worked over a decade in a range of leadership roles in marketing, strategy and general management.
Passionate about women’s influence and impact in technology, Vasu was active in the women’s networks at Intel and LSI and chaired Intel’s Women in Intel Network (WIN) program for the Santa Clara chapter.
Other passion is being a mum - she has 3 kids (girl, boy and a puppy) and her family enjoys hiking, cooking and watching sci-fi movies!

Heidi Williams, Sr. Director of Platform Engineering, Box (Moderator)
Heidi Williams is Sr Director of Platform Engineering at Box, responsible for Partner Integrations, View API,  Metadata, Developer Experience, and broadening the Platform vision overall. Prior to her role at Box, Heidi spent 17 years at Adobe in a variety of roles including: Engineering/Engineering Management on two v1 product teams(Dreamweaver and Flex/Flash Builder), Product Management for Flex Enterprise Customers and Partners, and Strategic Engagements working with NBC Sports and Adobe PrimetimeHeidi’s strengths as a leader include positivity, strategic thinking, creativity for solving complex problems, and a natural interest in what makes people tick. On weekends, Heidi enjoys exploring urban hiking in San Francisco with her husband and 2 daughters.
