The extraordinary growth of China and India over the past three decades, involving the two most populous countries in the world, has set in motion a process of social change that, in its scale and speed, is without parallel in recorded history. Breaking away, or so it might seem, from the ranks of a global South till recently united by economic backwardness and western cultural domination, the roughly contemporaneous entry of China and India into a period of rapid capitalist growth and market consumption offers important questions for humanistic inquiry. This symposium seeks to engage in productive conversations from trans-Asian and trans-media perspectives, as well as investigate the historical conditions from which the reform-era cultural productions arise and cross borders of one kind or another.
