What has our current system of paying hospitals and physicians fee-for-service gotten employers and your employees and their families?
It has resulted in employers, such as yourself, paying millions in excess dollars for care that is often not needed or of such poor quality that it must be fixed, resulting in even higher costs.
Today, 89% of the payments we make to hospitals and physicians are based on this fee-for-service model. Only 11% of our payments are "value-oriented" and tied to how well they deliver care or create incentives for improving both quality and cost. No wonder experts estimate that 30% of the money we spend on health care is wasted.
It is now time to flip the payment system and pay based on value, which will improve quality and reduce waste.
Come join us on August 29, 2013 to learn from national and regional experts about why we must change the way we pay hospitals and doctors; examples of how employers and coalitions are leading this change; and steps being taken by Tennessee health plans and providers to move toward new payment methods.
