Are you aware of the new systematic review of interventions to enhance adherence from AHRQ? Want to know more about it? Then join Dr. Christine DeLong Jones as she discusses findings from a recent systematic review of interventions to improve medication adherence (AHRQ Contract 290-2007-10056-I; Ann Intern Med. 2012;157:785-795). This review included randomized controlled trials of patient, provider, or systems interventions to improve adherence to long-term medications (62 total RCTs); in addition, this review included non-randomized studies of policy interventions to improve medication adherence (1 RCT and 4 cohort studies). Results included findings that reduced out-of-pocket expenses for patients, case management, and patient education with behavioral support all improved medication adherence for more than 1 clinical condition Dr. Jones will also review studies that found both improvements in medication adherence and clinical outcomes (e.g., case management and collaborative care for depression). Results from this review will be considered in the context of other recent reviews of medication adherence in HIV and AIDS: areas in which evidence is limited and could be addressed by future research will be highlighted.
