Activity Descriptions (Final Schedule TBA):
30 Minute Demonstrations (Morning):
Basic Food Preservation: Learn how to preserve your garden spoils. Get an introduction to food preservation from Marie Anderson, Master Preserver Program, USU Extension.
Vegetable Research and IPM: Dan Drost, USU Extension Vegetable Specialist, will teach you the latest on using cover crops to create your own organic fertilizer, how vegetable transplant quality affects your garden sucess, and how insects affect disease management in the garden.
Biochar: Britney Hunter, USU Extension Horticulturist, will introduce you to a cutting edge soil ammendment called biochar. Biochar is wood that has been pyrolized or burned to resemble charcoal. Pyrolysis turns wood that would have been wasted into a soil ammendment with water and nutrient retention properties. Biochar was discovered in soils where ancent civilizations lived near the Amazon, creating the richest soils imaginable. Fruit IPM Demonstration: Marion Murray, your trusted plant pest advisor at USU Extension will show you how USU Extension monitors for pest activity, and give you tips on how to use Integrated Pest Management for your own fruit trees.
Beneficial Insects in the Garden: Diane Alston, USU Extension Entomology Specialist, will give you a look at some live beneficial insects and teach you ways to attract them to your garden. Also, how insecticides affect beneficial insects and pollinators.
Taste Testing: Taste and vote for your favorite tomato varieties! Results to be published through USU Extension.
Irrigation: Kelly Kopp, Water Conservationa and Turfgrass Specialist, will introduce you to the latest, affordable climate based irrigation controllers for the landscape. Climate based controllers measure moisture in the soil to make sure you are watering only when the plants need water, saving on your water bill while keeping your plants healthy.
One Hour Workshops (Afternoon):
Flower Bed Design Workshop and Tour: Esther Henrichsen, Thankgsgiving Point Garden Designer, will walk you through flower garden design and give you an exclusive behind the scenes look at Thanksgiving Point Gardens. This workshop will be outside walking through the Gardens at Thanksgiving Point.
Soil Building Workshop: Grant Cardon, USU Extension Soils Specialist will give you a hands on look at different soils and soil ammendments while you learn about building your soil to create an abundant gardening.
Tree Care Workshop: Max Darrington, BYU arborist and Certified Arborist of Darrington Tree Experts will share the secrets of tree care. This workshop will be outside walking through the Gardens at Thanksgiving Point. http://www.darringtontree.com/about.html
High Tunnel Gardening: High tunnels are inexpensive unheated greenhouses that protect plants to give an earlier and more productive harvest of vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Britney Hunter, USU Exension Horticulturist will share her experience using high tunnels for small scale farming, and teach you how you can use high tunnels to get started in the backyard farming business.
