Master Classes give the public a glimpse into the training and community at the Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA). Each class is an opportunity to learn from prominent—and often legendary—theater artists in the intimate setting of Primary Stages Studios.

 

Master Classes are free and open to the public.

Elizabeth Wilson’s many Broadway appearances include the Yale Repertory/Arvin Brown production of AH, WILDERNESS with Jason Robards, Colleen Dewhurst, and George Hearn; the Tony Award-winning revival of MORNINGS AT SEVEN, which began at the Lake Forest Theatre in Illinois where she won a Joseph Jefferson Award as Best Actress; and her Tony Award-winning performance in the New York Shakespeare Festival’s Production of STICKS AND BONES. Her Broadway debut in 1952 was in PICNIC in the role she repeated in the film version. Her over 30 Broadway and Off-Broadway plays include TAKEN IN MARRIAGE (Obie Award); THREE PENNY OPERA (Drama Desk nomination); ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL; SOLONIKA as Jessica Tandy’s daughter (Drama Desk Award); SHEEP ON THE RUNWAY; YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU with Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst; and the all-star revival of Mike Nichols’ production of UNCLE VANYA with George C. Scott and Julie Scott. She starred in the Playwrights Horizon production of Harry Kondolian’s ANTIROOM (Obie Award).

She has made four films for Mike Nichols: THE GRADUATE (as Dustin Hoffman’s mother), CATCH 22, DAY OF THE DOLPHIN, and REGARDING HENRY. She starred in Robert Redford’s QUIZ SHOW as the mother of Charles Van Doren and in the highly successful THE ADDAMS FAMILY as Fester’s wicked mother. She was the office “snitch” Roz in NINE TO FIVE with Dolly, Jane, and Lilly; THE BELIEVERS; GRACE QUIGLEY with Katherine Hepburn; THE BIRDS; CHILD IS WAITING with Judy Garland; LITTLE MURDERS; PRISONER OF SECOND AVENUE; PATTERNS; THE GODDESS; and NOBODY’S FOOL with Paul Newman.

She received an Emmy nomination for her role as Lee Remick’s mother in the mini-series NUTCRACKER. She starred in the series EAST SIDE, WEST SIDE with George C. Scott, and DOC with Barnard Hughes. She co-starred in the mini-series QUEEN, IN THE BEST OF FAMILIES, the sequel to SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL, SKYLARK, and the CBS mini-series SCARLETT as Scarlett’s aunt. Her TV work also includes LAW AND ORDER: CI and MURDER SHE WROTE.

Her most recent film is HYDE PARK ON HUDSON, in which she plays the mother of Franklin D. Roosevelt. She studied with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse. Miss Wilson was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and now lives in New York City.


Joyce van Patten's work includes: Broadway: twenty productions including the recent The People in the Picture; I Ought to Be in Pictures, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Rumors, and Jake’s Women (all by Neil Simon); Taller Than a Dwarf; Same Time, Next Year; and More to Love. Playwrights Horizons: The Great God Pan. Lincoln Center: A Fair Country, Ring ‘Round the Moon. Chicago: Show Boat. Signature: The Oldest Profession. MTC. Labor Day. Public: The Seagull. Los Angeles Ahmanson Theatre: Rabbit Hole. Huntington: The Cherry Orchard. Film: Grown Ups; Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding; This Must Be the Place; Mame (with Lucille Ball); Bad News Bears; St. Elmo’s Fire. Television: six decades of work including the more recent “The Good Wife”, “Desperate Housewives”, “Without a Trace”, “Judging Amy”, “NYPD Blue”, “The Sopranos”, and “Oz”.

Primary Stages ESPA

Primary Stages Marvin and Anne Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA) is a multidisciplinary school with departments in writing, acting, and directing. Now in its eighth year, ESPA has refined actors who have been seen on and off-Broadway, developed writers whose work has won awards and received workshops and productions, and served as a professional and artistic home for emerging talent. ESPA is defined by its strong commitment to collaboration through programs such as Detention, a monthly series that partners ESPA writers, actors, directors, and a faculty advisor in the creation of highly original performances. Having provided a home to over 2,000 students, ESPA has become a leader in performing arts education through its excellence in training, collaboration and networking opportunities, and strong professional community. ESPA is open to all artists, in all stages of their careers.
