On July 16th, MassDevice  takes you inside the corner office for a front row seat on how decisions are made at the highest level of the medical device industry. 

We're pleased to welcome an incredible panel of leaders for our 2013 MassDevice Big 100 East and a look inside some of the companies, which have made headlines over the past two years.
 

This year, we welcome an extraordinary panel of executives, each of whom have changed the complexion of the medical device industry in some way.

The 6 CEOs represented have orchestrated the 3 largest M&A deals in med tech over the past two years, netted the single largest funding round in 2012 and are developing groundbreaking technology across all spectrum of the device world.

Catherine Burzik

Catherine Burzik, Former CEO Kinetic Concepts, Inc.

Ms. Burzik is a seasoned senior executive in the healthcare industry who has successfully led major medical device, diagnostic, diagnostic imaging and life sciences businesses.

Most recently she served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Kinetic Concepts, Inc. a leading medical device company specializing in the fields of woundcare and regenerative medicine. KCI was taken private by Apax Partners in 2011 for $6.1B , in the largest leveraged buyout since the fall of Lehman Brothers.

During Burzik's tenure KCI’s stock price doubled. She led significant product innovation, global expansion as well as diversification into regenerative medicine through the $1.7B acquisition of LifeCell.

Burzik currently advises several venture capital-backed biotech companies in San Antonio and San Francisco. She is a member of Board of Directors of Becton Dickinson, as well as the San Antonio Branch of the Dallas Federal Reserve Board. Cathy serves as Chairman of the Board, VitaPath Genetics Inc.; Chairman of the Canisius College Board of Trustees; and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Keck Graduate School of Applied Life Sciences. Previously, Cathy was a member of the Board of Directors of Allscripts, Inc., the Board of Directors of Bausch and Lomb, the Board of Directors of Cordis Corporation and the Board of Directors of the medical device industry trade association AdvaMed, where she chaired the Woundcare and Tissue Regeneration Sector. In 2012, Cathy founded the Catherine M. and Francis N. Burzik Foundation dedicated to furthering higher educational and the performing arts
 
 
Karen Licitra
Karen Licitra, Worldwide Chairman, Global Medical Solutions Group, Johnson & Johnson

Karen Licitra is Worldwide Chairman, Global Medical Solutions Group within Johnson & Johnson’s Medical Device and Diagnostics segment.  She is responsible for setting the strategy and vision for a portfolio of healthcare companies including the Vision Care, Diabetes Care and Ortho Clinical Diagnostics (OCD) franchises, as well as Advanced Sterilization Products (ASP) and the Sedation business unit.  Karen also leads the MD&D center of excellence for regulatory affairs.  Prior to her current role, she was Company Group Chairman for Johnson & Johnson and Worldwide Franchise Chairman for Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., and Johnson & Johnson Medical, Canada. 

Karen is known for creating innovative new growth platforms and has a wealth of domestic and global industry experience acquired during 28 years in sales, marketing, commercial and general management.   She serves on the Board of Directors of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), a trade association focused on the medical technology industry, and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the St. Peter's Healthcare System.  Karen is also the Board Chair for the Campaign to End Obesity, a cause committed to advancing national policy and platforms to combat obesity.          

A native of New Jersey, Karen earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing from Rider College (now Rider University).

Jeff Burbank, CEO and founder, NxStage Medical
NxStage’s Founder, Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Burbank has over 20 years of in-depth management experience with companies developing, marketing and manufacturing products for End Stage Renal Disease patients. He has led NxStage since its inception, guiding it through all of its developmental phases to the successful initiation and rapid growth of commercial activities, its initial public offering, and the acquisition of Medisystems.




Rick Packer

Richard Packer, CEO, ZOLL
Richard Packer joined the ZOLL in 1992 and became President of ZOLL in 1996 During 1996, he served as Chief Financial Officer of the Company and acted as interim Vice President of North American Sales. From 1992 to 1995 he served as the Company's Vice President of Operations. Prior to 1992, he was Vice President of various functions at Whistler Corporation, a consumer electronics company. Mr. Packer holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School, as well as engineering degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
 
 
 
 
Amar Sawhney
 
Amarpreet Sawhney, President, CEO, Ocular Therapeutix
Amarpreet Sawhney is the President and CEO of Ocular Therapeutix, Inc., a company focused on unmet needs in ophthalmic surgical wound management and drug delivery.  Previously, he was Founder and CEO of Confluent Surgical (acquired by Covidien), a biosurgery company, the Chairman of MarketRx (acquired by Cognizant), a provider of pharmaceutical marketing and sales analytics and intelligence, technology founder of Focal, Inc. (acquired by Genzyme) and Access Closure Inc.  Dr. Sawhney’s innovations are the subject of over 100 issued and pending patents. 


Philipp Lang,  CEO, President, Chairman of the Board, ConforMIS 

Dr. Lang founded ConforMIS in 2004 and has served as Chairman of the Board since its founding. He has been Chief Executive Officer since January 2008. Dr. Lang's management experience includes positions as the Director of the Musculoskeletal Radiology and Distinguished Weissman Chair at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Lang is also the founder of Imaging Therapeutics, Inc.. He has previously served as a Member on the Board of Directors of ViOptix, Inc. Dr. Lang has an extensive background in the medical device industry and has provided strategic leadership as an inventor of more than 80 patents, pending or issued, in the U.S. and abroad. He has an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and an MD from Albert-Ludwigs University, Freiburg School of Medicine in Germany.
