Mary Magdalene—Why Now?

Mary Magdalene turns her face toward us, compelling us to  search our souls for the Mystery she holds. Look at the icon; what do you see in her eyes, her expression? Known to us in the Christian and gnostic texts as witness to the resurrection of the man known as Yeshua, she continues to capture the imagination of artists, musicians, and writers. She enters our dreams.

Carrier of the shadow for 2000 years, she has been enjoying a resurrection of her own for the past few decades, most recently in two new major pieces of music.  The first is John Adams’s The Gospel According to the Other Mary, performed in Los Angeles March.7, 8, and 10. The second, The Gospel of Mary Magdalene, will have its premiere at the San Francisco Opera on June 19, 2013, and will have a total of seven performances.

Jungian analysts Karlyn M. Ward and Janet Robinson-Vuksinick each have been vitally interested in the figure of Mary Magdalene for many years. Using their own personal stories, current and historical works, and the libretti of these new works of music, they will explore the archetypal and psychological meaning of Mary Magdalene. Who was she? What message does she bring?
