Taught by Jim Leonard
People change through a combination of edification, example, exhortation, gentle rebuke and gentle encouragement. In our culture, this is often called counseling. As Christians who care about each other, we are to offer counsel with skill and copious prayer. CornerstoneWLA has developed a lay counseling ministry option for those who feel called to grow in being more skilled change agents within our fellowship. Counseling a married couple about their marriage, or about family issues, is a special area of counseling that deserves a closer look. By the end of this class, you should have a greater sense of confidence in your ability to come alongside one or both partners in a married relationship and help them heal or effect change.
Sundays at 5pm April 6th, 2014 – May 18th, 2014.
No class April 20th (Easter) and May 11th (Mother’s Day)
ABOUT THE CLASS
This class will explore what needs to be considered when a counselor sits down with two people who are joined before God in covenant marriage, to consider what isn’t working about their relationship. It explores what marriage is intended to be, common areas where it begins to fail or go off the tracks, and how to apply the principles already leaned in previous classes to bring about change and healing. We will cover improving your skill in the counseling event, exploring the struggles in the marriage relationship that are unique to it, and dealing with family issues both within the marriage (e.g. children) and outside of the marriage (e.g. parents-in-law, siblings). Some attention will be paid to diagnosis and assessment.
