Marketing Through Strategy: The Marketing Plan

Everyone knows the importance of proper planning, but few feel comfortable taking the time to develop a formalized plan. This is because we focus too much on the task of planning and thus make the task more difficult than necessary. The task of writing down a formalized plan is then often shelved and forgotten. This need not be the case. In this presentation, Dr. Smith will discuss the essential need for strategic marketing planning and how to go about the planning process. He will then provide an outline of the questions (and steps) that he asks his clients in order to create short 1-page marketing plans.
Dr. Smith is a professor at the Meinders School of Business at Oklahoma City University. He has taught courses in marketing and international business at Wayne State University, Saint Louis University, Saint Louis Community College and now at Oklahoma City University. He has published in journals such as the Journal of Advertising Research and the Multinational Business Review. He is currently working on research to evaluate the effects of religious symbols on the purchase intentions of consumers. In addition, he works with small businesses to develop their marketing and business strategies and has recently started working with the Economic Research and Policy Institute at OCU to design marketing and billing materials for Oklahoma City. Prior to earning his Ph.D., Dr. Smith worked as a small business consultant.

The Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) is a community of marketing and business development professionals working to secure profitable business relationships for their A/E/C companies. Through networking, business intelligence, and research, SMPS members gain a competitive advantage in positioning their firms successfully in the marketplace. In September of 2001, a small group of A/E/C marketers met and quickly decided that an SMPS chapter in Oklahoma was desperately needed to help firms within the state join together to form stronger partnerships and also to offer training opportunities for its members. Within three months officers were elected, Articles of Incorporation were filed, and on December 11, 2001, Oklahoma was declared the 50th SMPS chapter in the nation.
