Common Ground Health Clinic
"Solidarity Not Charity"
Common Ground Health Clinic is a nationally recognized patient-centered medical home, located in a historic Algiers, New Orleans corner grocery store. Our commitment is to help meet the primary care needs of the uninsured and under insured members of our community.
Founded by volunteers during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on September 9, 2005, the Common Ground Health Clinic sees 450-500 patients each month, and works in the community to address societal factors that contribute to ill health, such as systemic racism and poverty. Patient services include primary care, herbal medicine, social work, acupuncture, dermatology, endocrinology, referrals to behavioral health and cardiology services and Spanish language interpreting. Although fees for service are requested on a sliding scale, no patient is turned away for inability to pay. Additionally, our Latino Health Outreach Project mobile unit sees patients in varying areas of the city each week, and serves as patient advocates for Spanish speakers.
CGHC’s mission is to provide quality health care for the greater New Orleans community, and to develop and provide programs to address community health care needs through collaborative partnerships. Our goals are to: provide quality integrative healthcare; provide quality healthcare education for preventive self-care; create an environment conducive to patient, staff and volunteer learning; work in an anti-racist paradigm.
CGHC has a unique focus on culturally-conscious, anti-racist, holistic healthcare. In an effort to treat the whole person, CGHC also offers specialty services – Endocrinology, Dermatology and Cardiology, acupuncture, herbal medicine; gardening and cooking classes, exercise groups and health education sessions. CGHC also provides a comprehensive resource guide with information on free to low cost services in the community. Top diagnoses at CGHC include hypertension, diabetes, anxiety and depression.
