Event Details

Join us on Saturday, March 19 from 1:00pm - 5:00pm at the Orpheum Children's Science Museum. In the Antarctic, every March, the Emperor penguin begins its quest to find a mate, start a family, and find enough food to survive a perilous journey. Take part in this remarkable journey as we transform the Orpheum Theatre into the Antarctic. Join a rookery and choose a spot to setup your community, find a lifelong mate, search for food, and incubate an egg. Understand what the penguins encounter on their journey under the harshest conditions on earth, all to find true love and start a family. Will you be able to survive and keep your chick alive? Waddle and slide your way through this family adventure, complete with a Scientific Research Station hosted by Antarctic researcher and biology professor Dr. Christina Cheng. Participants are encouraged to watch National Geographic’s March of the Penguins before the event.

Tickets available online or at the door. $4 for members, $5 for nonmembers.

Organizer

Orpheum Children's Science Musuem

The Orpheum Children’s Science Museum is a regional, non-profit, children’s organization developed to inspire, engage, and educate children through exploration of science and the arts. As part of this, we are committed being an inclusive organization, reaching out to share our resources with those in the community who have the fewest opportunities. OCSM serves more than 25,000 visitors annually, encouraging learning and imagination through play and experimentation. Located in the heart of downtown Champaign, the 9400 square feet that comprise the Museum’ building are made up of hands-on, discovery-based exhibits that reveal fundamentals in mechanics, navigation, anatomy, hydrology, paleontology, and more as well as an historic theater, currently under renovation.

The Museum’s collection of more than 20 permanent exhibits, which appeal primarily to children ages 2-12, is dynamic and growing. Our theater is an historic community treasure that the Museum is rescuing. As a community based, volunteer organization, we rely on the active involvement of members, donors, foundations, and volunteers. The vitality of our organization is a testament to the strength of these community partnerships. OCSM serves local schools by providing field trips and exhibits that are aligned with Illinois State Science curriculum standards. Additionally, we provide camps, clubs, special events, after school, and weekend programs on a variety of topics .
