Event Details

Come join the Yale University Map Department, the RRAD SIG (Risk Reduction and Adaptation for Disasters Student Interest Group), and MapBox on April 12 for two workshops looking at open source tools in GIS.

The Yale University Map Department and School of Forestry invite you to day of open source mapping with MapBox. On April 12, we'll be holding two workshops looking at open source tools in GIS and OpenStreetMap. We'll look at free and open source tools like TileMill and QGIS in the morning session. The afternoon will be dedicated to OpenStreetMap, a free, user-driven map of the world.

Lunch will be provided, and we'll end the day with happy hour beers at the Cask Republic

Join us for one session, or join us all day!

***************

Workshop 1: A New Open Source Toolstack
9am-12:00pm
15-20 people

This workshop will review the latest in open source mapping technologies: Tilemill, QGIS, PostGIS, Shapely/Fiona.  As a free alternatives to ESRI’s ArcGIS tools, these programs are constantly evolving, have a increased capacity for dealing with diverse types of data, and producing more customized visualizations. The workshop will cover importing common data types into each program, introduce a few processing methods, cover advanced styling methods in TileMill, and finish with a web-deployed MapBox map.

## Agenda:
1. Overview of a new toolstack
2. Examples using vector and raster data
3. Workshop hour

Required: completion of Advanced GIS workshop with Stacey Maples or GIS Vector or Raster with Dana Tomlin. Please bring a laptop with QGIS, Tilemill already installed on your computer. PostGIS and Python libraries Shapely & Fiona are not required but recommended to follow along.

See this resource page for what you need to install prior to the workshop: http://inkwell.github.com/#b4e48f0169cd9b5900f2

Lunch: 12:00 - 1:30pm

Workshop 2: Using and Contributing to OpenStreetMap: Beyond just a base map
1:30-4:30pm
15-20 people

OpenStreetMap is a free, user driven base map of the world and the future for baseline geographic data. This workshop will focus on going beyond using OpenStreetMap as a base map and will look at the primary ways to contribute to and use geographic data from OSM. We'll look at use in disaster risk reduction activities and disaster response, along with covering methods for extracting data for use in external analyses. Participants will learn how to be active users and contributors to OpenStreetMap.

## Agenda:
1. What is OpenStreetMap and how can it be useful?
2. Tools to Contribute: JOSM and iD
3. Workshop + Mapping Party

No experience with GIS required. Please bring a laptop with JOSM installed and a two-button mouse. OpenStreetmap username will be required to use JOSM, iD, and contribute to OSM.

Happy Hour!
5:00pm+

Join us to celebrate post-workshop drinks and kick off the Global Health and Innovation Conference at the Cask Republic. MapBox will get the first round.
