Willie T. Barnes had one chance to make his life good. And it passed him by. He served in the military for nearly 18 years, until his mother’s illness brought him back home for good. His mother’s apparent disdain for him aside, he must wrestle with the thoughts of what might have been while waiting hand-and-foot on his bed-ridden mother.
He must also deal with his successful older brother. Debril Barnes has a Master’s degree, more money than anyone could spend in a lifetime, the respect of the financial community, and a wife who was nearly his brother’s wife some twenty years ago. In fact, his success is the reason he does not want his mother to live in his home rather than with Willie. Those born with silver spoons in their mouth would surely blanch at an elderly black woman who sometimes uses the bathroom on herself.
Finally, he must also wrestle with the echoes of his deceased father, Linc Barnes. Linc Barnes was once known as a sporting man – handsome, smooth, charismatic, and always dressed to the nines. He was a hard-working man, but fatherhood did not seem to agree with him. When the realities of his existence pushed in upon him, he abandoned wife and children, and Grace Barnes never recovered from his departure. She was especially hurt to learn that when Linc died in a car accident, there was a very young woman by his side. She was killed as well.
Willie tries and tries, but he can never be the apple of his mother’s eye. She blames him, openly, and on many different levels, for Linc’s hasty flight, and Willie will never know a moment’s peace caring for an ill mother who thinks so ill of him. She knows, deep within her soul, that one child was a source of pride for Linc, but two children were a burden he could not accept.
In the end, Willie finally understands that there are things beyond his control, and there is no law that says a son must love his mother.
