Education Day

A Bay Area Maker Faire 2011 field trip preview tour opportunity for grades K–12

Friday, May 20, 2011

11am to 2pm

Inspire your students at Young Makers Day, a unique preview of Maker Faire Bay Area.  On Friday, May 20, 2011, students get a sneak peek at some of our exhibits and workshops as Maker Faire is being set up for the weekend. Young Makers meet and interact with selected Makers, participate in some MAKE activities, and get a glimpse of the set-up process for this large-scale event.

We encourage students who come on Friday to return on either Saturday or Sunday with complimentary return admission for all attendees.  Groups of 15 or more students are welcome.  Groups must remain together for their entire visit.  Every class gets a subscription to MAKE magazine. Sign-ups are required.

Please note that this event is NOT the “real” Maker Faire with all that’s happening on the weekend, but a special behind-the-scenes tour + workshops!

Scholarships are available for Title 1 Schools and other educational organizations serving low-income communities.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

PAYMENT: Spaces for Maker Faire Education Day are not reserved until paid for in full. Admission fee includes one complimentary Maker Faire ticket for use on Saturday or Sunday. One adult chaperone may accompany 10 children free of charge on Friday; adults in excess of this ratio must purchase additional tickets.

EXHIBITS: Because Friday is largely a set-up day for the Makers, only a select few will be able to participate in Maker Faire Education Day. Fortunately, some of the brightest stars of the weekend event—plus some extra special Maker Faire Education Day exclusive guests—will be available to share their secrets—their projects, processes, and passions! We expect there will be more Makers than you can interact with during your visit. Maker Faire Education Day participants will have also have the rare opportunity to get an insider’s view of Maker Faire preparations-in-action.

HOURS: The hours for this event are 11am-2pm. Makers and the production staff of Maker Faire depend on this final day to set up a safe and successful event; it is critical they are able to focus on this task before 11am and after 2pm. We kindly request you adhere to the arrival and departure times. Staying beyond 2pm may jeopardize our ability to offer Maker Faire Education Day in the future.

FORMAT: We have designed a modified, semi-guided group tour to show you the flavor of the weekend without putting your students’ safety at risk. Because of the heavy machinery needed for set-up, some areas will be off-limits to participants for everyone’s safety. Volunteers will help guide small student groups through designated areas with presenting Makers.

FOOD: We’ll identify a lunch area for those groups who need to eat on-site. We strongly urge Maker Faire Education Day participants bring a bag lunch for this event, or to eat before or after the event. While a few food vendors may be open only for Makers who are setting up on Friday, not to feed all the field trip visitors.

PARKING: There is no parking charge on the Friday of Maker Faire Education Day (5/20/2011). Park in the main San Mateo County Event Center parking lot off Saratoga.

SPECIAL NEEDS: If you have any special needs students, please let us know so that we can work with you to accommodate their needs to the best of our abilities.
