Make Your Own Sound: Intro to Digital Audio Signal Processing and Synthesis in PureData
Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, August 16, 2012 at 9:30 PM (EDT)
Somerville, United States
Learn to create your own sounds! This class will cover basic audio DSP and synthesis techniques so that students can design their own unique audio effects, sounds, and synths at a basic level. Students will learn the ins and outs of sound engineering with software such as PureData, Max/MSP, or in traditional programming languages.
Students will also come away with a better understanding of the principles and theory of digital audio. PureData (free, cross-platform graphical programming environment) will be used extensively, as will M. Puckette's free textbook: http://crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/techniques.htm
During the class students will implement (in PureData):
- Oscillators, samplers, and filters
- FM Synthesis
- And other awesome sounds and effects!
In this class, students will:
- Learn basic audio dsp and digital synthesis concepts
- Become comfortable using and experimenting with PureData (and/or Max/MSP)
- Gain a better understanding of how computers produce sound
This will be a fairly technical class. Students should be comfortable with math at a trig/pre-calc level. A small amount of programming experience (in any language or topic) is also highly recommended.
We will be using PureData, a free software, and a free textbook: http://crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/techniques.htm. The software will be available on Artisan's Asylum/CEMMI computers, but students are welcome to bring personal laptops with the software installed. Students should provide their own headphones.
Nick Donaldson earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from UIUC in 2009 with a focus in audio circuit design and DSP, and his M.A. in Music Technology from McGill in 2011. He has been writing digital audio software, designing sounds, and producing music for over 3 years. Some examples of his work:
Session 1: Thursday, July 12, 7:30PM - 9:30PM
Session 2: Thursday, July 19, 7:30PM - 9:30PM
Session 3: Thursday, July 26, 7:30PM - 9:30PM
Session 4: Thursday, August 2, 7:30PM - 9:30PM
Session 5: Thursday, August 9, 7:30PM - 9:30PM
Session 6: Thursday, August 16, 7:30PM - 9:30PM
