Make Your Own GMO: An Intro to Genetic Engineering
Sunday, June 30, 2013 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM (CDT)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
Have you wondered how they get bacteria to produce Human Insulin? or How they made rice that contains increased Vitamin A? Or maybe you're just curious what exactly is a GMO?
Genetic engineering is the process of manipulating the genetic material of an organism — often to include the DNA from a foreign organism. During this workshop you'll learn the basic biology that enables genetic engineering. And then you will learn hands on by transforming bacteria by introducing a gene from the bioluminescent jellyfish Aequorea victoria.
