Make a Difference Day sends volunteers from the NIU community (students, faculty, and staff) into the community to assist area residents with lawn clean-up and other neighborhood small projects in preparation for winter. This service opportunity allows NIU students the ability to give back to the local DeKalb community as well engage with local community residents. SILD offers a similar service event in the spring called NIU Cares Day. Make a Difference Day hopes to aid local residents who are unable to keep up with the increased lawn care needed in the fall to prepare for the winter months and other types of small scale clean-up projects. Students will be focusing on two neighborhoods in DeKalb, Pleasant Street and Ellwood Historic Neighborhoods, but will provide service to other areas as well,
Volunteers may register as individuals or in teams of 5 or less. You have the option to create a team during the registration process. If you are interested in participating as a team, It is strongly advised that you figure out the members of your team before any memebers of the team register to ensure that everyone is on one accord.

NIU Student Involvement & Leadership Development
Community Service, a functional area of Student Involvement & Leadership Development, focuses on providing our students with opportunities to connect to and make a difference in their community. Through service, students not only enrich their community, but also gain hands-on experience in various work fields, build relationships with their peers, and learn valuable networking skills.
The Department of Student Involvement & Leadership Development firmly believes in the value of service to one's community and has thus incorporated community service as a component of the Department's focus.
