Event Details

Makana brings his symphonic slack key sound to the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco!

An intimate, solo performance featuring music from his broad acoustic repertoire, including traditional & contemporary Hawaiian music, slack key renditions of classics, and a growing collection of deep, inspiring, sometimes sexy and silly, original songs.

Makana is a composer, singer, and Hawaiian slack key guitar virtuoso, recognized in 2008 by Guitar Player Magazine as one of the top 3 independent guitarists in the US. He has performed worldwide in venues ranging from Tianjin Opera House to WOMAD Festival in England to The White House. He was the last student of legendary slack key master Sonny Chillingworth, and is considered to be "the greatest living player" of Hawaiian slack key (Esquire Magazine, March 2003). His traditionally-based approach to guitar creates a symphonic resonance in the guitar that sounds like three guitars being played at once! Here is what some of the press has to say about Makana's music:

"Makana provided a textbook illustration of slack-key style … dazzling." - New York Times -

"Slack key guitar music, indigenous to Hawai'i, has been around longer than the blues, and Makana is considered the greatest living player." - Esquire Magazine -

"His transfixingly agile slack-key technique and genre-crossing music have relit a fire for live music in Waikīkī." - San Francisco Chronicle -

“… Makana captivated the audience with a high voice, personal songs and powerful acoustic guitar.” - BBC News -

"I've gotten way into Andres Segovia, and this Hawaiian guitar player called Makana" - Kirk Hammett (Metallica lead guitarist) -

Makana's music is diverse, with influences that include Tim & Jeff Buckley, Pink Floyd, Gabby Pahinui & The Sunday Manoa, Paul McCartney, Cat Stevens, old Genesis, Sting, Dylan, Elton John, Andreas Vollenweider and Jimmy Page.

An evening of Aloha in the Bay Area!  Doors open at 6:30pm.

Chance to win a three night stay at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel courtesy of the Starwood Hotels and All About Hawaii.
