Majora Carter is an internationally renowned urban revitalization strategy consultant, real estate developer, and Peabody Award winning broadcaster. She is responsible for the creation & successful implementation of numerous green-infrastructure projects, policies, and job training & placement systems. After establishing several local and national organizations to carry on that work, she built on this foundation with innovative ventures and insights into urban economic developments designed to help move Americans out of poverty.
Majora Carter wants to slow down the "brain-drain" in our nation's poor communities and create a society in which people don't have to leave their neighborhoods to find opportunity. About the Permaculture Your Campus Conference
The mission of the 2013 Permaculture Your Campus Conference is to bring together students, faculty and staff from international colleges, universities, and businesses to learn why and how permaculture design is being used as the guiding framework for some of the most cutting-edge sustainability programs around the world.
At this conference, attendees will examine diverse models of institutional sustainability that were designed using the campus permaculture toolset. Participants are also able to gain hands-on permaculture experience and explore transformative strategies for creating a culture of sustainability at college campuses and other organizations.
Whether you’re a student or faculty or staff participating in campus sustainability, a dining services manager or in the physical plant, this conference will provide you with a new set of tools that will help you in your job, and will help your institution become a leader in the international sustainability and permaculture movements.
About the UMass Permaculture Initiative
The UMass Permaculture Initiative is a unique and cutting-edge sustainability program that converts underused grass lawns on the campus into edible, low-maintenance, and easily replicable gardens. Permaculture is a regenerative design system that involves people working together to create ecological and edible landscapes, low-impact buildings, and sustainable communities and economies. This initiative was created by students and then adopted and funded by our administration in 2010. Students and permaculture staff work together along with UMass Dining Services, the Campus Sustainability Initiative, and many other departments to demonstrate the vision of what a sustainable community and world can look like.
The UMass Permaculture team was recognized in 2012 by President Obama as one of the top campus projects making a difference in the world. The second annual Permaculture Your Campus Conference will be held at the University of Massachusetts Amherst June 23-26, 2013. Learn more at www.UMassPermacultureConference.com
