Once Upon a DateTime

Speaker: Michael Antonovich

Summary: Creating calculated measures and columns in DAX is an essential part of any Tabular or PowerPivot model. Since most data represents events that occur over time, a time dimension is critical in those models to reveal data trends. However, perhaps even more important than just using time as a dimension is using DAX time functions to calculate aggregate measures grouped on discrete time periods such as months, quarters, and years, period to date aggregates, and the analysis of parallel periods to compare the past to the present. For most financial analysis of data, the ability to look at data grouped by different time periods is essential in making good business decisions. Come to our monthly meeting to learn how to use the DAX date functions to successfully analyze data over time.

About Michael: Mike Antonovich is the Assistant Director Web Services for OCPS in Orlando, FL where he manages the SharePoint Portal and .NET Development teams. The SharePoint portal side of the group supports all the external district and school web sites, the internal employee intranet, and all district and school collaboration sites. His group has also been responsible for multiple .Net custom applications used throughout the district. He has published 7 computer related books beginning with the Apple II followed by various editions of FoxPro and SharePoint since then. He hopes to branch out into fiction when he gets a chance to breathe. He has spoken at over 2 dozen SQL Saturday, Code Camp, etc. and two recent PASS Summits. He is currently focused on the entire Power Suite from Microsoft, but especially on PowerPivot and Data Analysis for the Masses (his DAM obsession).

Pre-Meeting Presentation

Cloud Databases 101 (Video Replay From The 2014 PASS Summit)

Speaker: Rimma Nehme

Summary: Cloud computing has emerged as an extremely successful paradigm for deploying applications. Scalability, elasticity, pay-per-use pricing, and economies of scale are some of the major reasons for the successful and widespread adoption of cloud. A cloud database is a type of database service that is built, deployed and delivered through a cloud platform. In this talk, I'll give rapid introduction to cloud databases: what they are, where they came from, how they are implemented, and give a rough taxonomy. We'll look at some of the specific examples of the cloud databases running out there in the wild and the latest state-of-the-art cloud database research.
