Event Details

Lyrics in Motion is an experimental piece that combines the cadence and rhythm of the written word to the art of interpretative movement.

The Poet
We ask Wordsmiths to create their work of art using topics from The Seven Deadly Sins versus The Seven Virtues which they have picked at random. They will have two (2) days to create a three to five (3 to 5) minute piece to which they will perform.

The Dancer
The Dancers will then pick the Poet and their piece at random. They will listen to the poetry and choregraph a movement based on the musicality of the words, the measure and lilt of the Poet’s voice and language.

The Art
Both artists will collaborate to perform the piece in front of a live audience. That will be the first half of the show. The second half will be the freestyle portion of the show where the Lyricist will then pull another virtue or vice that has yet to be selected at random. The Dancer will pick the poet. Together, they will perform a Sound and Movement piece on the fly. The challenge for the artists will be to listen and watch each other.

Our Goal
We want to include the audience in the process of artist collaboration and see where it takes us metaphysically and emotionally.

Modern-Day Griot Theatre Company

Modern-Day Griot Theatre Company is an experimental, interdisciplinary theatre company that is committed to expressing the human experience by using the storytelling art-form of the West African Griot.

A griot (GREE oh) is a storyteller, singer, musician and oral historian (pretty much an African troubadour-historian). They often sing songs telling stories of their cultural heritage and traditions.
