The Lutheran Hymn Festival 2016, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone, will be held on Sunday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. This will be the tenth Lutheran Hymn Festival to be held in Dallas since 1993. It will take place in one of the world's greatest concert halls, the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. This year's festival will feature hymnody from the Lutheran tradition, with an emphasis on next year's 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Many of the hymns were written and composed by Martin Luther.
The purpose of the Lutheran Hymn Festival is to:
Glorify God - soli Deo gloria!
Encourage one another in the faith by singing hymns. The Scriptures bid us to do so: "...singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Ephesians 5:19 - 20 NRSV). And again, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word and deed, do everything in the name of our Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him" (Colossians 3:16-17 NRSV).
Proclaim the Gospel to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex community.
Encourage and support the training of young church musicians. The residual funds from this evening's festival will be used for scholarships to the Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival.
The Lutheran Hymn Festival has been blessed over the past nine festivals to make financial gifts to mission and ministry agencies totaling $112,500. From the past four festivals, $65,000 have been given to the Lutheran Music Program, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to transform lives and connect people through faith and music. The Lutheran Music Program provides quality training for young people who are considering careers in worship as organists, at their annual four-week Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival.
Lutheran Hymn Festival 2016 will feature a mass choir of singers from Lutheran Churches in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, under the direction of Samuel J. Eatherton, Minister of Music at Zion Lutheran Church in Dallas. A children's choir made up of students from area Lutheran Churches and Schools will be directed by Cynthia Nott, Artistic Director of the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas.
Dr. David Cherwien, a nationally recognized church organist from Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN, will serve as guest organist for the festival. He will play The Herman W. and Amelia H. Lay Family Concert Organ which is the focal point of the Eugene McDermott Concert Hall at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. The organ and the Meyerson Symphony Center are acoustical and architectural benchmarks and are a proud legacy to generations of music lovers in the Dallas area.
