All volunteers must first register their presence and then register for one Team activity for the day. All volunteers are encouraged to bring a bag of rice of any size. Volunteers working on gardening or building activities are encouraged to bring appropriate gardening tools for the outdoor activities

Join Team 1 - LSG - Task: Rice Packaging - volunteers will remove rice from 50# bags and make 10# bag of rice Ended Free  
Join Team 2 - LSG - Task: Bag Closers - volunteers will receive full bags of rice, remove the air and close the bag Ended Free  
Join Team 3 - LSG - Task: Bag Labeler and Packer - volunteers will apply label to bag of rice and pack completed bags of rice for transport to LSG offices Ended Free  
Join Team 4 - LSG - Task: Rice Transporters - volunteers will pick-up rice at Wonderland Gardens and transport it to LSG offices, unload and store rice Ended Free  
Join Team 5 - Wonderland Gardens - Task: Re-landscape Storyland - volunteers will build raised beds with recreate and with plastic lumber Ended Free  
Join Team 6 - Wonderland Gardens - Task: Build Cold Frames (Miniature Green House) - volunteers will attach lumber pieces, fill with container soil and follow plant chart Ended Free  
Join Team 7 - Wonderland Gardens - Task: Mulch Woodlands Areas - volunteers will use woodchips to mulch woodland areas; mulch demo garden and turn compost area; and use wood chips to mulch in walkways Ended Free  
Join Team 8 - Lyon Farm - Task: Build Deer Fence - volunteers will dig 28 holes; put poles in hole and add cement; place hooks in fence at predrilled holes; place fence on hooks; and add additional fence at the bottom section Ended Free  
Join Team 9 - Lyon Farm - Task: Prune Entrance Bush - volunteers will use weed brush cutter to cut small brush; use pruner to cut large brush; and mulch area with wood chips. Ended Free  
Join Team 10 - Lyon Farm - Task: Prune Driveway Bush - volunteers will use weed brush cutter to cut small bush; use pruner to cut large bush; and mulch area with wood chips Ended Free  
Join Team 11 - Lyon Farm - Task: Build Cold Frame (Miniature Greenhouse) - volunteers will attach lumber; staple plastic to wire; fill with container soil and incorporate fertilizer; place string to mark rows; and follow plant chart and plant seeds at pr Ended Free  
Join Team 12 - Lyon Farm - Task: Mulch between vegetable beds - volunteers will use wood chips to mulch between vegetable beds Ended Free

Atlanta Lutherans hold Day of Service

to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

on Janaury 17 at 9am

You are invited to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday by participating in a Lutheran Day of Service on Monday, January 17.   Youth and adults will gather at the Porter Sandford III Performing Arts Center to work on the following projects:

  • Project 1 - Rice for Refugee Families - for Lutheran Services of Georgia
  • Project 2 - Outdoor Projects - for Wonderland Gardens & Lyon FarmLSGWonderland Gardens

9:00 AM - Gathering & Welcome 

9:30 AM - Rice for Refugees 

  • You will create family sized rice packages from 50-pounds bags of rice.  Volunteers will repackage rice in to usagle five-pound packages that will be give to refugee families newly arrive inthe Atlanta area.  Rice is a main diet stable of these families.  Last year's rice project created a supply that lasted almost six months!
  • Project location is the Pavilion at Wonderland Gardens or the Sanford Center Lobby (bad weather)

9:30 AM - Outdoor Projects at Wonderland Gardens & Lyon Farm

  • Wonderland Gardens is committed to stewardship of the Earth through programs that actively promote organic gardening, green education, recycling and healthy living in communication with nature.   The Wonderland Gardens mission si to create a self-sustaining green space destination and community resource that connects people to nature.

Important Information:

This is a free activity sponsored by Lutherans who wish to serve. You are not required to bring anything other that your willingness to serve.   The following information may be useful. 

  • LSG requests that you bring a bag of rice of any size
  • Gardening tools will be provided by Wonderland Gardens through the Atlanta Tool Bank.   However, it would be helpful if you are able to bring your own tools for your personal use.   Tools used include weed eater with brush cutters, loppers, hand pruners, pitch forks, wheel barrels and large tarps.

Lutheran Day of Service begins with our gathering at the Sandford Center promptly at 9am.   Individual projects are scheduled for 3-4 hours (estimated completion).  

All projects should be complete before 2pm.
