It is a crime to leave North Korea. Yet increasing numbers of North Koreans dare to flee. They go first to neighboring China, which rejects them as criminals, then on to Southeast Asia or Mongolia, and finally to South Korea, the United States, and other free countries.
They travel along a secret route known as the new underground railroad. Join us for lunch to hear Melanie discuss her newly published book, which tells the harrowing story of the North Koreans’ quest for liberty.

Melanie Kirkpatrick is a journalist, writer, and senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. She contributes reviews and commentary to various publications, including the opinion pages of The Wall Street Journal, for which she worked for many years as a member of the editorial board. In addition, Melanie spent 10 years in Asia, working for The WSJ Asia in Hong Kong.
She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations; a trustee of Princeton in Asia, an internship program in Asia for young graduates of American universities; and a director of the America for Bulgaria Foundation.
She lives in Connecticut with her husband, Jack David.
