To be a Tacoma citizen is to be informed of our past, to help us understand the present and set the stage for the future. At City Club’s Jan. 16 lunch, retired Tacoma educator Dr. Jerry Ramsey will trace the history of our area’s first citizens, provide an overview of the impacts that treaty rights and federal recognition and laws have had on our area’s Native Americans, and bring us up to speed on current concerns and achievements in the Tacoma community. Dr. Ramsey is active in the Tacoma Historical Society and the Fort Nisqually Foundation and has received volunteer awards from both Fort Nisqually and MetroParks.

Complementing Dr. Ramsey’s talk will be a display of museum quality artifacts, courtesy of Jack Curtright, whose family history includes membership in the S’Klallam Tribe near Sequim Bay. A graduate of Stadium High School and a former teacher, Curtright is a passionate collector of Native American artifacts and owner of Tacoma’s Curtright and Son Tribal Art gallery.
