PROGRAM SUMMARY

Course Number: FSR721

Credits: 1 LU/SD/HSW

Today’s designs demand a variety of communications and multi-media capabilities; this course will guide architects and interior designers through the convergence of technology with building design.  Audiovisual applications in various spaces will be covered, and the connectivity requirements associated with them will be discussed.  AV, along with IT technologies impact the structure, and housing the connectivity components of these technologies in ceilings, walls and floors will be featured.  A variety of ceiling, wall and floor boxes as cable management will be discussed.  The different features of these boxes will be covered, as well as UL requirements, electrical issues, the merging of technology and aesthetics, and developments in connectivity will also be presented.  Various connectivity and cable management solutions within tables and other furniture will be covered.  Different types of infrastructure components will also be discussed.

The impact of audiovisual systems on sustainable design will be presented.  Innovative AV technologies that can contribute to LEED certification will be discussed along with “Green AV”.  The practice of Building Information Modeling will be featured to highlight areas where AV products can benefit within the BIM model.  Clash detection for cable pathway routing is one example of how BIM can impact AV technologies.  Areas where AV can promote the health, safety, welfare and productivity of building occupants will also be discussed.  The program will relate to designs of the interiors of educational facilities, hotels, churches, boardrooms, workspaces and general meeting rooms.  Working with AV consultants to prepare for media aspects of the design will be discussed in the final portion of the presentation.  The program has also been approved for credit by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA).

Organizer

American Institute of Architects Miami Chapter

The American Institute of Architects was created in 1857 by a group of architects in New York City.  The goal of the first members was to have a place where members could meet for lectures, conventions and meetings. The original 13 have grown to nearly 300 local chapters representing 80,000 licensed architects and associated professionals. AIA members adhere to a Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct that assures clients, the public and colleagues of their dedication to high standards in professional practice.

Florida's state association was formed in Jacksonville in 1912. By 1929 the Florida Chapter had been divided in three chapters, Florida North, Florida Central and Florida South. The Florida South Chapter was divided several times as the region grew. In 1980, the Florida South Chapter changed its name to the Miami Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1987. There are 670+ members in the chapter.

Throughout its 77-year history and particularly during the last 25 years, AIA Miami has strived to provide its members with the services, activities and knowledge delivery required to maintain the high standard of profession.

AIA Miami has always stressed public awareness and appreciation of architecture and its related fields. Many of our activities strive to provide a venue where the architecture profession and the general public can meet and initiate conversations which will allow Miami and the South Florida region to continue to emerge as a vibrant and diverse community, where architecture and design are play a vital role.
