The event is designed to empower and educate attendees by informing them about the effects of low vision. The symposium will also cover tips on reading, crafts, watching TV, cooking and caring for yourself.

Event attendees will learn the latest treatment advances evolving in the low vision field, including the equipment. Exhibitors and featured event speakers will offer participants many opportunities to learn about research medications, low vision therapies, vitamins and occupational therapy.

Sonya Braudway, OD, is the program chair. She practices at the Center for Retina and Macular Disease, in Winter Haven, FL.  Dr. Braudway received her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the Corpus Christi State University and her doctorate from the University Of Houston College Of Optometry. She completed a fellowship in low vision rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Her current research interests include outcomes studies in vision rehabilitation. She is on the Medical Advisory Board for the Macular Degeneration Association based in Sarasota, FL.

Guest speaker: Yolanda Cates, MS, OTR/L, CDE she is the occupational therapist at the Center for Retina and Macular Disease.

The Macular Degeneration Association’s educational symposium in Lakeland, FL, will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to interact with a low vision specialist and an occupational therapist, fellow patients and caregivers in an open forum.

Macular Degeneration Association

The Macular Degeneration Association is a nonprofit health organization providing macular research, information and advocacy. MDA is an IRS recognized 501(c)3 organization and contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

The mission of the organization is to cure macular degeneration and to improve the lives of all people affected by the disease.

To fulfill this mission, the MDA will fund research, publish scientific findings, provide funding for education, information and other services to people with macular degeneration, their families, healthcare professionals and the public. The foundation advocates for the increase in funding for scientific research and for the rights of people with macular degeneration.

The money raised by the foundation funds research,education, information programs and advocacy and awareness efforts that will support the over 9.1 million people with macular degeneration in communities across America.
