Event Details

Taught by Matt Kleinhans
God has called us to love the city of Los Angeles. This class will explore the answer to the question: what does it look like to love our city?

Sundays at 5pm April 6th, 2014 – May 18th, 2014.
No class April 20th (Easter) and May 11th (Mother’s Day)

How are Christians called to live in and love the city of Los Angeles? How do we as Christians reflect God’s love for the poor and marginalized in our city? What does it look like to “seek justice” in our day and age? Who are the marginalized in our communities, and what has God called us to in their regard? These questions and more will be explored in this six-week class, with a sharp focus on what God’s Word says about justice, the marginalized, his kingdom, race, culture, and privilege, and how Christians are called to engage and represent Christ in our city.

For the past 10 years, God has been developing Pastor Matt’s heart for the city of Los Angeles. Matt longs to see Christ glorified in the city through the spreading of His gospel, and through the faithful love of His people.

This class is partially lecture, but primarily designed to be a class discussion. The reading is supplemental and not required, but will be a helpful pairing to the class conversations.

Week 1 Justice: What is biblical justice?
The God’s character in the gospel and throughout the entire Bible is clearly one of justice. It can be difficult to navigate waters of justice and injustice in our society. This class explores how Christians can live justly, reflect God’s heart in a city full of injustice, and actively live lives of justice.

Week 2 The Marginalized: Who are the marginalized in our society?
The Bible outlines God’s deep, compassionate heart for those of low social standing and power. Christians have a responsibility to reach out to, give voice to, and actively love those who are marginalized in our society. This class explores what that looks like in our context.

Week 3 The Kingdom: What is the Kingdom of God, and how does it relate to the Church and to our church? The Kingdom can be incredibly confusing, are we in the Kingdom, or just living Kingdom principles? Are we called to “advance the Kingdom”? These questions can be difficult to answer, but the Bible provides guidance for how we ought to think about the Kingdom of God, the kingdoms of this world, and how that relates to the ways in which we actively love our city.

Week 4 Race and Culture Part 1: How are we as Christians called to live in light of racial injustice, cultural prejudice, class and racial privilege, and the racial and cultural divisions that so frequently characterize our world and our city?
Loving the city of Los Angeles means loving each and every part, cherishing, reaching, loving, celebrating, reconciling, and worshipping together with the Church, which represents every tribe, tongue, people, and nation. This class will explore the biblical approach to these difficult issues.

Week 5 Race and Culture Part 2

Week 6 The Church and the City: What does Cornerstone Church have to do with God’s work in Los Angeles? What role does the local church play in God’s call to reach out and love the marginalized in our midst? This class explores the intersection of personal Christian responsibility and the corporate responsibility of the local church.
