It's been a while since 1972 when Despierta Boricua (DB) was founded, and today DB still proudly remains the Puerto Rican student association at Yale University. With forty years of rich history on campus, Despierta Boricua has continuously been a community for Puerto Ricans to come together and make their voices heard. Over the years, Boricua Yalies have triumphantly worked to have their goals and concerns met by the Yale administration. With the resources we have available now, we clearly can see the tremendous amount of work past DBers have done for Latinos on campus.
The Latino community has grown exponentially since the seventies, and we all greatly respect those past students who made such a safe space possible for our culture, traditions, and voices to be welcomed. Despierta Boricua has played such a pivotal role in the Latino presence on campus it is without a doubt necessary that the organization is recognized for its monumental role on campus. The gala is aimed to showcase and honor the achievements, successes, and the impact Despierta Boricua has had on the Latino community and the entire university. We want to come together to celebrate with alumni and current students DB's impact on campus, as well as it's role in the future.
