In 1958 a very young Alan Bates was in New York City to reprise the role in John Osborne's play Look Back in Anger that had recently made him a star in London. Between rehearsals he was prevailed upon to do a half-hour montage, London by Dickens, drawn from Charles Dickens' lesser known short writings Sketches by Boz as well as The Uncommercial Traveller, Sketches of Young Couples, The Mudfog Papers
and The Pic-Nic Papers. It is one of Bates’ first television appearances.
Enjoy a rarely seen performance highlighting some of Dickens' lesser known short works--truly a unique presentation, featuring Dickens scholar Fred Guida, who is a film programmer at the Yale Center for British Art.
London by Dickens was recently screened at The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
