Noël and Company's Eva Le Gallienne Festival presents Liliom (1909), a fantasy drama by Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnár. The piece tells the story of the ill-fated romance between rough-hewn carnival barker Liliom and sweet-tempered servant girl Julie. Liliom is best known today as the inspiration for the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. The original play is a beautifully written, hilarious and utterly gripping work that has been sadly over shadowed by the musical's international success. A truly stunning piece of theatre we are proud to introduce to today's audience.
Liliom first appeared on Broadway in an English translation by Benjamin Glazer in 1921. The production starred Joseph Schildkraut as Liliom and Eva Le Gallienne as Julie.
Starring Shawn Fagan, Erin Davie, Merwin Goldsmith, Nili Bassman, Jessica Bates, Marc Vietor, Mairin Lee and John P. Keller.
Direction by Keith Merrill
Produced by Anne Kaufman
Cabaret stars Andrea Marcovicci and Steve Ross will perform a pre-show "Prelude," and Leenya Rideout will orchestrate our folk tale with original music as well as violin and mandolin classics. An exhibit of treasures belonging to Eva Le Gallienne will be on display.
"Eva Le Gallienne was a great American actress, director, producer, translator and pioneering spirit. The world we live in seems to be becoming a “how quickly they forget” sort of world, and this Festival devoted to Miss Le Gallienne is a wonderful idea."
- Andre Bishop (Artistic Director, Lincoln Center)
When & Where
Noël and Company's Eva Le Gallienne Festival 2013
New York City’s premier theatrical salon combines staged readings of 20th century plays, the very finest of actors and musical preludes by world class musicians and vocalists.
Miss Le Gallienne began the Civic Rep. in 1926 - the country's first clasical repertory company. Already a young star at the time she turned her back on fame to bring to our country a real 'people's theatre', focusing on the very highest of acting standards, the greatest of plays and affordable pricing. At Noël and Company we share this mission with Le G and are proud to carry that vital torch for this courageous trailblazer and true artist.
