Event Details

Lighting is everywhere. We instinctually understand light. We expect shadows on a sunny day. We squint before we go outside. When it suddenly gets darker, we look up. There’s only one light source in this solar system, the sun. One light. For milennia, human instinct and what we’ve come to understand, we know as being natural, comes from that one light source the sun. I use the word natural intentionally because it’s an important concept. A photograph looks natural, it looks believable, when light with just one “apparent” light source. That is the way we are used to experiencing the world. So when we put on our photography hat, and we decide to take control of our images and direct the light, to shape it and use it intentionally to sculpt each of our individual masterpieces, it makes sense to use just one light. This is the foundation of every good photograph. Sure, you can use several lights, a hair light, a fill light, an accent light, background lights, but the truth is, the photograph starts with just one main light. This establishes the look and feel of the image. This is the key light. One main light is how we understand the world on a primitive level. One main light is the perfect place to begin and often complete a beautiful and powerful image. In this Workshop, we will learn different sources that we can use as key lights including a speedlights, a strobe or any other type of natural or artificial light source as well as how to use them.

About the Instructor:

Clifford Pickett is professional commercial photographer, event photographer and educator based in NYC. He first picked up a camera while spending a year traveling through Europe after having earned his MBA early. Like many travelers, that passion for seeing and experiencing the world is precisely what ignited the spark for photography. Clifford has spent all of his time since learning how to see and capture the world with the fresh eyes that traveling affords. He hasn't been shooting for 40 years, he hasn't been alive for 40 years. He hasn't been classically trained in the fine arts either. He is entirely self taught, through books, workshops, seminars, DVD's and real life, it is this that perhaps may be his greatest asset, the ability to relate to the amateur photographer. Not having been so far removed, it is this understanding that allows him to help his students see through the cloud of misinformation and confusion and marketing spins to find real answers to questions from those who share the same passion for the world, and need to capture and share it, that he does. Leveraging both the business and photographic skills he has developed while managing a private testing laboratory, he recently is the owner of a photography company specializing in the construction industry and a commercial video production company. His corporate clients include Estée Lauder, Sephora and Clinique.
