Rick Siegel, Director of Photography & Lighting Designer, has worked on feature length and short films in the narrative and documentary genres. This exclusive workshop is an information-packed class giving you the essentials to work with a director of photography or set-up and shoot your own interviews. Part discussion and part hands-on, this workshop covers how to maximize your location, how to light the interviewee to best effect, how to set up the camera and how to make the right decisions on set that will positively affect the edit. We'll then work hands on with the skills we've acquired throughout the discussion portion of the workshop. By using the ABEL offices as our "interview locations", we’ll explore many of the real world situations we all encounter. We’ll use two cameras, a small lighting and grip kit to examine the light and frame choices within each setup.
How to Light and Frame for the Best Looking Interview Ever takes the following questions into consideration:
- Who is the person we are going to interview? What is their role in the story we are photographing?
- What perception do we we want to engender about our interviewee?
- Who is in our audience? How will they be viewing the final story?
- What style of lighting and which camera/lens choices will best support our efforts?
- What are the location and/or studio logistics to consider? Small room? Large room? Furnishings?
- What style of lighting and lens selection will offer the best cosmetic choice for our interviewee and the story we are creating?
- Subsequent topics: Light quality & control, multiple lighting sources & color temperatures, windows & treatment, teleprompter, camera movement, sound issues.

The course was four hours but I felt like I walked away with four days worth of knowledge! Rick structured the class well by giving us all a well defined context and a solid amount of technical and practical information upfront before then packing up the chairs, picking up the lights and doing it for ourselves.
No matter whether you're an auditory, kinesthetic or visual learner Rick had you covered; he spoke passionately and with plenty of room for questions, he showed excellent real-world examples of exactly what he was talking about and then he had you do it yourself.
I would take an Origami class if Rick Siegel was teaching it and would therefore happily recommend this class to anyone wanting to learn about lighting for an interview. The four hours felt like four minutes and you found yourself walking out into the streets saying, "I know lighting!"
