A gathering of favorite works from the company’s first decade, freshly re-imagined into an evening-length experience on June 13-16, 2013. Presented on custom-built stages and catwalks on Heron Street, the South of Market alley where LEVYstudio is located, the selection celebrates the roots of what critics call “daring, densely layered, kinesthetically detailed, and emotionally intense choreography.” Spring Season at Home will navigate viewers through the “athletic and lyrical, brainy and sexy” choreographic landscape of Benjamin Levy’s artistry.

“[The] willingness to take risks whether physical or emotional, whether it’s a big vision for the company’s future or diving off the end of a stage, is what defines LEVYdance.” —San Francisco Chronicle
For more than a decade, LEVYdance has been a dynamic San Francisco dance institution, known for artistic excellence, creative collaborations, and a home studio in the SOMA District that acts as a hub for self-expression through movement. As a creative incubator and community resource, LEVYdance is a significant presence in the arts ecology and economy of San Francisco.
At the core of LEVYdance is an internationally touring dance company recognized for innovative, interdisciplinary, interactive works that explore the nuances of being human. Its values of risk taking and rigorous creative development, and its aesthetics of kinetic dance that balances form and raw emotional experience, resonate through all of the organization’s programs. LEVYdance acts as both a gateway for new arrivals to the local dance scene, and an ambassador on the road representing the creative values of our region.
Communities that dance together grow together
LEVYdance’s activities are diverse, united by a desire to build community both within and beyond the professional dance world. We embrace the audience as an integral part of performance, and seek to engage with individuals from many backgrounds and life experiences. Beyond performing in traditional venues, LEVYdance creates innovative multi-media, site-specific and installation works that explore new relationships between performer and audience.
LEVYdance creates projects and programs on a variety of scales each year, through a wide array of multi-disciplinary collaborations. Current projects include a weeklong Summer Intensive for student and pre-professional dancers; the Salon, a quarterly performing arts showcase focusing on new work; the AMP (Artists Maximizing Potential) choreographer residency program, which serves as a comprehensive support structure for a visiting artist to develop and tour new work; and the Laboratory programs, which give professional artists and instructors an opportunity to expand their creative tools through new artistic interactions.
As LEVYdance enters its second decade, we move from a single choreographer/founder model to a more expansive vision that embraces many artistic perspectives that fulfill our company’s mission and support our creative culture. In 2015 as Founding Artistic Director Benjamin Levy transitions from active leadership to an advisory role on the Board of Directors, LEVYdance moves forward with a new organizational structure, hiring its first Executive Artistic Director to lead the company into its next chapter of artistic excellence and creative and community partnerships.
“LEVYdance is a contemporary company that takes creative risks, values strong modern dance technique, and successfully marries form and content in composition. Possessing all of these qualities and characteristics is less common than you would think; in fact, it is quite rare. LEVYdance is special, and another ten years of their work would be a gift to the larger modern dance community.” – Ballet Dance Magazine
