The American Society of Interior Designers presents the 2014 Legislative Symposia series! These events provide the chance to learn and engage with ASID staff and government affairs professionals as we work together to advance the interior design profession. Join leaders across the country in educational exchanges to gain first-hand knowledge of state-level grassroots movements, lobbying efforts and coalition management, as well as information on important legislation affecting designers—in your state and nationwide.
Attendees will participate in lobbying training exercises, learn about the legislative process and network with fellow politically active members of the interior design industry and learn the keys to success. CEU credits will be offered on topics such as the globalization of interior design, messaging and communications, and the development of codes and standards. Fan favorite Christopher Kush will return to share skills and tools to help you better advocate on behalf of interior design.
Throughout the day, attendees will attend three breakout sessions, each led by a legislative expert. Session include:
California Legislative Update with Susan Stuart
A presentation on the legislative process in the state of California as well as current interior design legislation that has passed and may be coming up in the next few sessions. This session will help you to identify exactly how the legislative process works in your state and what key indicators you should be aware of that can affect your practice rights.
Boot Camp for Advocates with Christopher Kush
This interactive session will teach you:
• The difference between simply sending a message and building a relationship with elected officials
• Quick and dirty bill analysis (4 things you need to know about any piece of legislation)
• Effective Letters-to-the-Editor
• Hook, Line, and Sinker: the parts of a legislative meeting
• Preparing for the Opposition
• Recruitment practice, including how to handle rejection without being depleted
• Bringing it all together: Town hall meeting
Technical Aspects behind the Profession of Interior Design with Kat Fern, ASID, IDEC
A session focused on the definition of the interior design practice and scope of work. You'll be able to answer these questions after completion:
• What are the different scopes of interior design practice?
• What is the scope of work provided in CA law?
• How does this practice differentiate from the scope of engineers and architects?
• What training, testing, and education is necessary in order to practice?
• What do the qualifications mean to building officials seeking to make distinctions amid qualified professionals?
• What role do appellations play in distinguishing recognition?

A refund of the conference fee, minus a $25 administrative fee, will be given for cancellations received by that date. No refunds will be granted for requests postmarked after April 2, 2014. Submit all requests to ASID Registration via email at email@example.com. ASID regrets that refunds will not be given for no-shows. Substitutions are gladly accepted! Badge sharing, splitting, and reprints are strictly prohibited.
